DO YOU REMEMBER...

Another blast from the past. Does anyone remember Captain Kangaroo? (He just died a couple of weeks ago, I think it was) and we also had The Romper Room, pre Sesame Street Days!, I am not sure if that was a national or local one though. Locally we also had Mr. Peppermint, he worked for the local ABC station here and he wore a white with red stripe jacket and a straw hat and I think he had a cane and he taught us little things, kind of like Mr Rogers, in between cartoons. He also made characters by painting a pic on his finger and bringing it up through the bottom of a box. ( I know, very low tech, but it was really something for us back then. We didn't have all the tech stuff have now.) He was a kind of in between Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Rogers.

And of course, we did not have this one as a kid but those of us who had kiddos in the past 10-15 yrs probably all know about

BARNEY the big purple dinosaur!!!! he got alot of flack, but he actually taught kids alot. Taught them to have manners, say please and thank you. He taught them about different situations and to not be scared of or make fun of handicap ppl. Taught them about ppl of different cultures. And then of course, colors, numbers, etc...

One I never liked that came out after Daniel was too old to watch the Teletubbies!

What about the Smurfs, for some reason I never liked those little things!

Power Rangers, Pokemon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Voltron,
PowderPuff Girls.

One thing I always had as a kid and I loved it and played with it for hours, mom always hated it, was Play-Doh and Silly Putty. I never had the fancy machines that they came out with to make things. We just always loved playing with it. Sometimes we would get the molding clay that came in squares, but it was harder to work with. And of course, I think everyone, at least all the girls had sidewalk chalk and we would make hop scotch patterns on the sidewalk. We were so easily amused back then.

I loved Captain Kangaroo, I watched him every day before I was old enough to go to kindergarten. A bit of trivia - he was Clarabelle on the Howdy Doody Show before getting his own show. And who could ever forget Tommmmmm Teriffic!

Mr. Peppermint was a genuinely nice man. He used to participate in the yearly auction to benefit the school my son atttended. Did you know his son is in the band called "Butthole Surfers"? :D

No I knew he had a son(s) one was about our age. A little bit older/younger than me, I think older. Because we played their school in football. What a name!

Yeah I forgot about Archie. I always liked Veronica, because she had dark hair lol, but Betty was the smart one and the more likeable one!

Every day when we got home from school my Mom would give us a large pretzel stick, and my sisters and I would sit down to watch the Mickey Mouse Club. I used to slowly suck the salt off the pretzel, nibble at it bit by bit, and make it last the entire length of the show. :D

Didn't really remember that one, but the website said the debut in 1957 and only ran for 3 year, 360 episodes. I do remember seeing some though, I guess it was repeats. Because I was born in May of 1959 so I know I was too young to have seen it when it aired. I always liked Annette.

I lived in Waterloo, IA for 5 years when very young. There was an A&W in town, and I remember going there on numerous occasions. I was always sat on the armrest in the back seat, between my sisters, in our early 1950s black bubble car. They made miniature hamburgers for kids, and had child-sized glass mugs for root beer too. I felt so grown up having my own hamburger and cup :D

It was in reruns by then, I don't remember watching it before 1963 (first grade)... but we were glued to the tv every day regardless. My oldest sister loved Annette, and wanted to dress like her lol... I remember Karen & Cubby the best because they seemed to be my age ;)

And another unforgettable mouse...

We used to watch Ed Sullivan together as a family, and some of our favorite characters were Senor Wences and Topo Gigio.

Shari Lewis was great too, I had a Lambchop stuffed animal at one time.

Here's a song about Pepino the Italian Mouse. Was this from Ed Sullivan or another show?

PEPINO THE ITALIAN MOUSE
Lou Monte... 1962

Pepino o you little mouse o wont you go away,
Find yourself another house to run around and play
You scare my girl you eat my cheese you even drink my wine,
I try so hard to catch you but you trick me all the time.
Cesta no surecillo a basoccella dinda mur
Ogna sere quella esce quanda casa scura
Endo dindo la cucina balla sulasu
A parrano malandrino pura un gabo sapaur

Pepino suracill ana parta scubari,
Managa suracill a casa ma dai,
A quando si briaggo a Pepino giong apa

The other night I called my girl I asked her could we meet,
I said lets go to my house we could have a bite to eat,
And as we walked in through the door she screamed at what she saw,
There was little Pepino doin the cha cha on the floor.

Pepino o you little mouse o wont you go away,
Find yourself another house to run around and play
You scare my girl you eat my cheese you even drink my wine,
I try so hard to catch you but you trick me all the time.

Quella no piace forgia American,
Quella va trova no poca Parmesan,
La fatto ghiata ghiat gusto ena cor
Quando cella camina para probino caladur.

:D

Where were you when Apollo 11 landed on the moon?

On July 20, 1969, the U.S. Apollo 11 lunar module landed on the moon in the first of six Apollo landings. Astronaut Neil A. Armstrong became the first human being to set foot on the moon.

The first people on the moon were U.S. astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, who took this picture, and Buzz Aldrin, who is pictured next to a seismograph. A television camera and a United States flag are in the background. Their lunar module, Eagle, stands at the right.

We were all in the living room, except mom, she was fixing supper! I thought was real exciting.

Does anyone remember "Love, American Style"?

Alot of the styles we had back then are now coming back. I remember wearing baby doll swimsuits because my mom didn't want me to get too used to wearing a bikini, thought that they showed too much skin, even on a little girl!

I loved my cordurouy bell bottoms! and then later the hip huggers. I really liked them, because I am so short waisted! Well let's face it everything about me is short!

The peasant blouses and the baby doll blouses. Go- Go boots. Had to have them. The first pair I got in about the 3rd grade were white patent leather and they looked like they laced up the front, but you just pulled them on/off, very hard to do. So the next pair I got, black ones had a zipper to make it easier to get on/off. Then I got the high heel ones and when I was married we were walking down the stairs to go somewhere and one of the heels broke and I almost broke my neck. Luckily I was only about 3 steps from the bottom!

Baby doll swimsuits! I think I had one of those, the fabric that came down from the top was kind of sheer like the suit at left.

Remember Nancy Sinatra's awful song "These Boots Are Made For Walking" ?

How about the "shirtwaist" dress?

http://www.fiftiesweb.com/fashion/dress-shirtwaist-sears-66.jpg

My favorite pair of bellbottoms, which I think I got in 6th or 7th grade, were a dusty rose in color, hip huggers, and had 4 buttons in the fly.

HOT PANTS!
I had a pair of dark purple button front hot pants my freshman year in HS. Loved them :D
