DO YOU REMEMBER

Is a place to wax nostalgic. Things, places, food, train sets made of metal, drive-ins, 1950's spaceage furniture, bubble cars, anything goes. You don't have to have liked something to post it here, it's all about sharing your memories.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm going to start out with something we used to have around the house as kids. We didn't keep pop in the house, but there was always had a supply of Fizzies in the pantry. They didn't taste very good dissolved in water, but we used to sneak them from the pantry when my Mom wasn't looking. Then, we let them dissolve on our tongues. If you haven't had one, they were like flavored Alka-Seltzer... :D
Since we're talking about things nostalgic, one thing I really miss from the past is the local ice cream shops that made their own product. We used to have several in the town where I grew up but now there are none left.
We still have them here.......and they are wonderful. One even has the little juke boxes on the tables. It also makes candy.
I remember playing jacks on my grandmother's porch on hot summer mornings. Everyone would go inside at noon and not return until after dinner......
penny candy... with the creamy lipstick candy. not like the sweet tart kind they have out now ;)
Gosh I haven't thought about that candy lipstick in years. I found an online store that sold a lot of the old stuff. I never ordered anything. :(
Splinters in the hand - always, but not at Granny's.......she had a concrete porch. Our hands were always scratched up and red.
Who remembers Space Food Sticks? Some flavors were just awful, but the chocolate & peanut butter were ok... :D
http://www.retrofuture.com/images/spacefoodsticks.jpg
"Pillsbury used their role on Apollo 11 as a launching pad for a spin-off which they imaginatively dubbed Space Food Sticks. The Tootsie Roll-like candy came in several flavors including caramel, chocolate, malt, mint, orange and the ever-popular peanut butter.
Aficionados will recall that the Space Food Sticks came wrapped in special foil to give them a space age look. The front of each pack featured an illustration of an anonymous astronaut happily chomping on a Space Food Stick. The box clarified the important role the development sticks played "in support of the U.S. Aerospace Program."
It turns out Pillsbury's aggressive marketing ruffled a few a feathers in the nation's capital. One year after Space Food Sticks were introduced, the Bureau of Deceptive Practices undertook an investigation of Pillsbury's claim they were "ounce for ounce" as nutritious as milk. A document issued by the company in response--available at NASA's archives-asserted the snacks were "suitable as total food replacement" in the unlikely chance that no other foods were available."
Talk about a walk down memory lane....Those candies, AA.....great list...but I would add Squirrel Nut Zippers.
When I was in elementary school, I'd walk to my Dad's office after school each day..He'd give me a little bit of change and off to the corner store I would go. What fun to remember these things.
I had the Chatty Cathy doll, too, but for the life of me I can't recall what color shoes she had.
Good call, EJ--grape and sour apple licorice were fun, too! Tonka trucks, Lincoln Logs, and Tinkertoys, and Erector Sets were fun in my youth, too.
And the skates had a Key....Talk about a skate key to kids today and they have no clue. :)
I loved roller skating. I spent so much time at the roller skating rink in my little town....I was in the south, so ice skating wasn't popular, but we could all roller skate.
That's another thing: the little corner stores that sold everything from candy to groceries. We had three or four within a mile of our house when I was growing up. Now they are virtually extinct (well, they've morphed into the ubiquitous 7-11 and its ilk).
