There have been a number of posters, lately, who seem to think that because they post something in a post, another poster's response sounds like a temper tantrum, that they have litsters on puppet strings.

I really doubt any of us get so terribly upset by what we read.

However, I don't want to just provide conjecture, I thought I would go to the boards and ask.

rarely its all in good fun even if i sound angry i am usually not!!!!;)

Everything I read here infuriates me!

I can't even express how incensed I am that the you scum of the earth dare to pollute my bulletin board with your raving lunacy and racist propaganda!

And I take it all deadly seriously too.

I am much too passive aggressive to rant. Upset and angry don't define how some situations push my buttons. I do get mildly irritated and shake my head in disdain.

And, I don't have any rats' asses.

Limited choices. I picked other, anyway.

Clearly, MissT, some do get irate. Just as clearly, however, the chances of a post (or PM, or email) being misinterpreted by most if not all people who read it is a well-documented phenomena. The classic examples here are typically but not always attempts at humor or sarcasm, and the drier ones are virtually always misunderstood by many people. That's the nature of written communication, even when people know each other very well.

It's my observation that many times when somebody is moved to post something which sheds light on a topic from a different angle there are three possible reasons. First, naturally, there are some people who just need to express themselves. Secondly there are some who wish to engage in a debate, with the hope/expectation that they might influence their "adversary" in a way that changes his or her mind. Thirdly there is a large class of "responders" who will post a small number of replies merely to point out other perspectives never imagining that the individual they appear to be debating will change - that person is at times somebody recognized by regulars as one who espouses strongly held beliefs which lack substantiation - so that newer folks aren't drawn into false debates with fanatics which only waste their time (unless you count that these exercises doubtless provide some sort of amusement or other gratification to the fanatic, that is.)

I think most often when you see what could be taken as anger it's likely the poster is much more often rolling his or her eyes and/or shaking his or her head, frankly.

It really depends on what the issue at hand is.

When I first came to Lit, I let stupid things bother me. Now I tend to just laugh at everything. People can be so fucknig dumb.

What he said.

I am IRL a pretty sarcastic pain in the ass, and I'm no different here, so often I post things that sound perfectly fine in the voice in my head (which sounds pretty much like Carmella Soprano) but come across to others as just plain bitchy. But to behonest I don't care that much, as if it sets off a little fight, that's just that much more entertainment for me.

When I roll my eyes or shake my head, I do it behind my screen, not on the board. Then I shut off the computer or go play a game of scrabble. Sometimes I'm too blunt, or just have a weird sense of humor and unless I know you, I wouldn't want to poke my nose in your business.

I also think personal stuff should be kept personal if you are going to get upset about it.

How did you know who would be posting right after you like that? Your new title could be "Mistress Irony" to honor your awesome forecasting ability.

Try Bookworm

Laurel posted this site a while back and I am now addicted. A fun little Scrabble type game. My son likes to play with me. Bookworm is always a good time while visiting Lit.;)

what she said. i might make some reply if something really bothers me, but most of the things that bother me come from people i don't respect, so i'm not going to 'debate' anyway.

Yes! Bookworm rocks!

I'm addicted to Alchemy also. Why, I have no idea, but that little puzzle game is fun :- )

I've only seen one or two posts in my time here where I thought someone was justified in being truely upset.

I generally laugh at it all and I have a good time adding sarcastic comments or poking at people to get them to react (especially in the political threads! :D )

I am not angry when I post...

however there has been a few times when I did find myself getting to that point. That is when I know I have to walk away because it is not worth it. For the record the whole Sub Bitch boy thing initially started off out of anger to protect two friends. By the second post in that thread I was laughing my head off and took it lightheartedly. When I was done with it others still tried to keep it alive. For whatever reason I do not know.

Debate is one thing but it seems to be the norm here to take pop shots of another's character when the other feels they have nothing else to say on the subject or to stir the shit up. I am not innocent of this tactic either but still not to the extent others use it and when I have it has been directed to those that have zinged first. Some use it also to stray from confronting the topic presented. Mirrors and smoke screen. A debate is discussion or consideration of opposing reasons over a topic. I have said in the past that there is no harm in hearing both sides of the coins. We all have something to learn from another, however the zings take away from a valid point and belittles whatever the person is trying to discuss.

I have tried to bite my tongue with dealing with some. It is amazing how one or two I have never directed any zings towards still zings me and even last night to direct an insult towards me. Sad part is this person is friends with people I know in real life. I have been abstaining from his/her comments because of that. There will come a point I will not hold back if he/she continues to throw my name in it just to seek attention or get approval. Those who know me in person and from lit for years remember I am still the same person ya love but people do not read the whole board and notice the attacks spread out within posts. You do not see it until it is your name being brought up either.

There is a pattern people get bored and do not know what else to write so they seek out a person or two to get a flame thing going. Looking for a game of mind chess. However it is hypocritical when the person complains about it and then in the next thread or post attacks or brings up a topic they know will stir up things. Am I saying I am innnocent to this too, no but again not to the extent others do.

Again I do not seek this attention however when I am bored and there have been a number of insults sent my way I will not hold back. Again it is not out of anger but something to do.

Good question.

Peace,
Tulip

This is a good time to say thank you Lukky, for your participation at this place. You are one of a very small handfull of posters (people) who seem to enjoy all aspects of conversing with this huge range of personalities, without running roughshod over any of them. I have watched you chastise someone for being rude or nasty, yet there is no doubt you would speak with them should they choose to act like a civil person. You take part in political debate, and serious personal issues, and you post thoughts about silly stuff too, like hats :). I have no doubt that if i were to meet you in person, It would be a great pleasure to know you.

As far as myself, there is almost nothing I read here that upsets me. I'm a foriegner in this written medium, and know I am at a distinct disadvantage compared to those more highly educated, or simply more comfortable in communicating with the written word. I consider it a personal challenge to participate, and like most personal endeavors, I choose someone (or ones) more adept than I and more or less learn from what I see.

Personal attacks are interesting, since I've learned that there is no victory.. Verbal attacks can just continue on until the parties simply lose interest. I have enough life experience to know that in person, not one of the most vile posters would have the courage to spew thier crap in an eye to eye encounter.

Perspectives are quite different. There are those here who believe things that are very counter to things I hold near and dear. I always enjoy reading thier thoughts, and will sometimes even evalute my ideals, based on what is written. I confess though that I have never changed a deeply held conviction based on anything I've seen here. What I have changed is my opinion about a person. I have found that initial opinions here, just as in real life can be wrong. We are complex creatures.

Whenever I get too caught up in anything on Lit, I take a moment and look up and see my familiar surroundings, my home, and things slip right back into perspective :)

If it is a challenge, it is one you have risen to and conquered.
