At what age do you think it's important? It has recently dawned on me that nobody knows if I do/don't want extrodinary measures taken if I were to be in an accident. Nobody knows whether I want to be cremated or just buried. What would happen to my savings? My 401K? hmmmm....

So do you have one?

When my first daughter was born in '94, I decided to get all the necessary paperwork together. Mainly to insure that if something happens to me, my wishes for my kids well-being will be carried out.

My mom recently passed away in August, without anything in order. It was and has been a struggle since. Knowing her wishes was to be DNR, it was a battle with my brother to get it done. She finally convinced him in a lucid moment (brain cancer).

I think it is a favor to your loved ones to prepare your will and make your wishes be known.

If there is one thing I could tell people...

It would be to HAVE A WILL.

No matter your age or health condition. I'm sure people who are killed in freak accidents aren't expecting to die, that's the nature of an accident.

Not only should you have a will to make sure that your wishes are carried out, but also to save your family quite a bit of trouble. In the state of NC if you have a will in which you appoint an Administrator over your estate they are "automatically" the Administrator (Unless someone challenges it -- they usually don't). However, in the event that you die without a will, you must "apply" to be the Administrator (usually the spouse or next of kin will do this) and also be bonded by an insurance company. This costs MONEY. Most places (unless you have all your insurance there usually) charge you a fee, sometimes a percentage of the bond amount and sometimes a set fee. Either way, your family has to come up with this CASH. Generally, they have enough to worry about.

Of course, this advice may not be applicable in all states, but wills really aren't that expensive to have drawn up. Isn't it worth the piece of mind it would give you and your loved ones? :)

If you are in the least confused about who to leave what to....just feel free to leave it all to me and I'll see that it gets divided in a manner I'm sure you would approve of! :p

Ok boss I will.

But you said you dont like my CD collection.

You should do your will ASAP. I don't want to sound depressing, but you just don't know.

SS, that was some excellent advice.

I had my will and durable power of attny--the cost was $150 for both.

Currently, my only worry concerning my sudden and unexpected death would be who would have to clean all the shit out of my house.

The peace of mind from having your will made out is incredible. And for those of you who are too lazy, burdening your family this way defines you as an asshole.

After working in the trauma center for so long, I know that there is no way I would want the legal problems ON TOP of the emotional and other financial burdens that are involved with unexpected death.

Be sure to think about this the next time you pass an MVA somewhere--or an ambulance passes you. The only difference between you and the one that is hurt is the grace of God.
