Last night at the debate, Beto says: "Hell yes, we're going to take your AR-15's."
Within minutes, a GOP Texas state lawmaker Tweets out: "My AR is ready for you" which prompted accusations of that being a "death threat."
I'm not totally certain that qualifies exactly as a "death threat" but I am pretty sure it would be found on a list of "How ammosexuals masturbate."
.
For a Texan, Beto seems very tone-deaf to other Texans. It's not a death-threat, more like the classic "Molon Labe" (Come and Take It) that was also on the Alamo flag. I only lived three years in Texas and I know that much.
I understand, however, that Beto is being frank and sincere in his statements. He means well. He really believes in what he advocates. He's also desperate to climb back up in the polls. He really needs to bow out and run for Senate, but this last comment might have sunk his chances for that.
My own proposal for handling the AR-15 is much like what we did with the Thompson submachine gun. It worked. We imposed a tax and license for it. The numbers of owners dropped more than a little and the ones who still got them did far less violence. It's not a ban, but it's not completely ignoring the role of assault rifles in mass shootings (even if media exaggerates their prevalence a bit, they have been used in a lot of horrific incidents of late, so that's fair). My solution is nuanced, it curtails the proliferation of assault rifles, but doesn't ban or force anyone to sell back.
Collection and enforcement of a mandatory buyback and ban would be a logistical and PR nightmare.....probably a political one, too.
