Of these three, DLL, I most agree with Lost in Translation because it speaks most directly to me at this point in my life.
What do you think he whispered into her ear near the end of the movie? Do you think he suggested that the two would get together again when they both return to Los Angeles? Or do you think it was a very fond farewell? Given her smile following the whispered message, I think they will see each other again.
But then, I'm a sucker for endings where people follow their spirits (some would call it their hearts, I guess).
I enjoyed Lost in Translation very much as well. I felt it was simple but complex in the issue of loyality. I don't think they will see each other again, but that could be my mental state at the moment. I want to think they will but actually hope that the promises they made to others is stronger.midwestyankee said:Back on topic.

They would rarely be listed as "love stories," but two of my favorite movies would certainly qualify as complicated love stories. I'm thinking of The Big Sleep and Chinatown.DLL said:i love complicated love stories....![]()

I beg to differ. Her mate hardly knows she is alive. His wife communicates almost exclusively by fax and Fed Ex. When they talk on the phone the conversations are banal. That is the limit of their communication in this film. We are led to believe that his marriage has been dead for years.Cathleen said:After more of "my pondering" (gee I just never give it a rest) Yank, why do you choose the the words following their hearts or spirits with this movie. I just am not seeing that in this instance. I am thinking that if they do indeed see one another again, it really wouldn't be following their hearts, for their hearts belong to another. My gut is saying it would be following a type of lust, not heart, and not all out lust either; perhaps a deep fondness. But if they follow their spirit/heart, they will stay with their mates.
I enjoy our difference of opinion here, just wondering where the path of the difference enters if you will. If you feel like responding.
You know Yankee.... I see how willing I let that go, until you pointed it out here. I think I am totally caught up in accountability and vows right now, plus the examples I've seen lately of indifference to one another in a relationship, that I've come to see that as "the way it is". But you remind me that the give and take, do unto others as we would have done unto us, the ying and yang, all do matter, and far more than the promises these characters had made to others. I am wondering just why I would settle for a crappy promise kept, then a true sharing of hearts.midwestyankee said:I beg to differ. Her mate hardly knows she is alive. So - if these two who met in Tokyo found something in each other's spirits that made them laugh and work hard to be loyal to each other, then they would be following their spirits if they got back together again.
IMHO, that is.
Perhaps we can put a hold on the baseball dialogue and return this thread to its original purpose. If others wish to talk of baseball and such things, surely there is a better place for it. As much as I enjoy seeing the Red Sox beat the Yankees - especially in New York - I think enough is enough.Cathleen said:And not that I am keeping score or anything.....but Sox 6 of 7 against the yankees this season.....cool sweep in "The House That Babe Built" is extra special!![]()
to you, Cate, for wanting to spread good news.
