mmmm, choking? ... that is not a point given!!!!! unless you want to talk about the batting averages of the current yankees, not one .280 hitter the last i saw, not one. a-rod had a hit yesterday, so break out the bubbly??????? yanks are under .500 for the season so far, and their dreaded rival Boston has whooped up on them in both Boston and new york, sheesh, aren't you ashamed to go out in public????

lol, ya know we love kidding you about this ...

be well all, shy

Wow Yank...with Shy here... those yankees are sure to lose now... Sox will be victorious for sure this year!! Schilling is learning his Boston-esque phrases, all is great in Red Sox nation!

DAN SHAUGHNESSY
Working on perfect game
By Dan Shaughnessy, Globe Staff | April 25, 2004

NEW YORK -- You will wake up today and gaze in the mirror and you will look like Brad Pitt (Cameron Diaz if you are a woman). Your front lawn will resemble the 18th green at Augusta and there will be a Cadillac Escalade in your driveway. There won't be a cloud in the sky, there will be no traffic on the roads, and the toll booths all will be gone on the Mass. Pike.

You are a Red Sox fan on April 25, 2004, and that means your world is just about perfect. It's all flowers and red balloons and bright smiles and sunny days. And you can't wait until 1:05 today because you just know that Pedro Martinez is going to continue this sudden Sox mastery of the New York Yankees.

That's right. Mastery. Tracing the tracks of their tears from so many years, the Sox have traveled to the House That Ruth Built and whipped the Yankees two more times this weekend. Yesterday's 12-inning, 3-2 Boston victory means the Sons of Tito are a gaudy 5-1 over the Pinstripe People in these back-to-back weekends.

The Yankees are scuffling. The team with the highest payroll in baseball history ($185 million) can't buy a hit. The team with five guys who drove in 100 runs last year can't cross home plate. Even the Yankee bullpen, always better than Boston's, took a back seat to the Red Sox' relief corps yesterday. It is as if the hardball gods have conspired to reward the long-suffering Sox fans by making the Yankees the object of abject frustration.

Derek Jeter is 0 for his last 21, officially the longest slump of his big league career. Alex Rodriguez has finally wandered north of the Mendoza Line, but he was booed in the first inning when he hit a feeble comebacker to Bronson Arroyo. The Yankees are 8-10, tied for third place in the American League East with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and four games behind the Red Sox in the loss column.

George Steinbrenner was not at the ballyard yesterday. He's reportedly in his bunker in Tampa, but the Yankee world awaits an explosion from the owner at any moment. The venerable Gotham tabloids are killing the Yanks, and Bronx fans have been booing when not insulting the locals with mock cheers. They're beginning to think Jose Contreras is an embedded Red Sox.

Yesterday the Sox were able to beat the Yankees on a day when Boston batters went 0 for 19 with runners in scoring position. The Sox beat the Yanks on three sacrifice flies. The Boston bullpen outpitched Mariano Rivera & Co.

"Their whole game, every facet of their game, has been almost flawless," said Rodriguez (did we mention that the Sox tried to get A-Rod over the winter?). "It was in Boston and it's been here. They've executed very well. Their bullpen has been one of their strengths. We're playing a good team over there in Boston and they're playing with a lot of energy."

The Yankees have a lot of new players, including Rodriguez, yesterday's starter Kevin Brown, and today's ace, Javier Vazquez (on three days' rest). Stars like Gary Sheffield and Kenny Lofton have gotten their first taste of the Boston-New York salad over the last two weekends, and the results have been less than satisfying.

Ultimately, of course, New Yorkers are depending on old hands Jeter, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, and manager Joe Torre to get them out of this funk. They are the ones who know.

"Things have a way of evening themselves out over the course of 162 games," Jeter said calmly in the losing locker room. "The season's not over. It's what, 19 games? [Actually 18.] Don't write the story of our season today.

"It is surprising that most of our people are scuffling at the same time. Without question we want to play better. We just have to forget about the game today and the game before and the games in Boston. You want to play well. You don't want to be swept, I don't care what level it is. We do have a lot of pride."

Torre, who has been in the Apple too long to take the apple, added, "Right now we're down in the valley. This is when you earn your money. A lot of things are working well, we're just not hitting. But there's no room for sympathy in this game. We have to come out tomorrow and face a great pitcher. We're too talented up and down the lineup to expect this to last."

Good for them. They can say whatever they want. But you are a Red Sox fan on April 25, 2004, and nothing's going to change your world. You are going to eat all the brownies and ice cream you want and still look like Brad Pitt (Cameron Diaz if you are a woman). You are going to win the lottery and quit your job. The road is going to rise to meet you and the wind is going to be at your back and the Red Sox are going to keep beating the Yankees from here to October.

how about lost in translation ????
Back on topic.

Of these three, DLL, I most agree with Lost in Translation because it speaks most directly to me at this point in my life.

What do you think he whispered into her ear near the end of the movie? Do you think he suggested that the two would get together again when they both return to Los Angeles? Or do you think it was a very fond farewell? Given her smile following the whispered message, I think they will see each other again.

But then, I'm a sucker for endings where people follow their spirits (some would call it their hearts, I guess).

I enjoyed Lost in Translation very much as well. I felt it was simple but complex in the issue of loyality. I don't think they will see each other again, but that could be my mental state at the moment. I want to think they will but actually hope that the promises they made to others is stronger.

and just to prove i really don't get out much these days, ...

how about "My Cousin Vinny" ...

she really put up with him and supported him thru years of struggles and helped him even when she was spitting nails mad at him. that is love ...

They would rarely be listed as "love stories," but two of my favorite movies would certainly qualify as complicated love stories. I'm thinking of The Big Sleep and Chinatown.

After more of "my pondering" (gee I just never give it a rest:rolleyes: ) Yank, why do you choose the the words following their hearts or spirits with this movie. I just am not seeing that in this instance. I am thinking that if they do indeed see one another again, it really wouldn't be following their hearts, for their hearts belong to another. My gut is saying it would be following a type of lust, not heart, and not all out lust either; perhaps a deep fondness. But if they follow their spirit/heart, they will stay with their mates.

I enjoy our difference of opinion here, just wondering where the path of the difference enters if you will. If you feel like responding.

And not that I am keeping score or anything.....but Sox 6 of 7 against the yankees this season.....cool sweep in "The House That Babe Built" is extra special!:D

I beg to differ. Her mate hardly knows she is alive. His wife communicates almost exclusively by fax and Fed Ex. When they talk on the phone the conversations are banal. That is the limit of their communication in this film. We are led to believe that his marriage has been dead for years.

So - if these two who met in Tokyo found something in each other's spirits that made them laugh and work hard to be loyal to each other, then they would be following their spirits if they got back together again.

IMHO, that is.

You know Yankee.... I see how willing I let that go, until you pointed it out here. I think I am totally caught up in accountability and vows right now, plus the examples I've seen lately of indifference to one another in a relationship, that I've come to see that as "the way it is". But you remind me that the give and take, do unto others as we would have done unto us, the ying and yang, all do matter, and far more than the promises these characters had made to others. I am wondering just why I would settle for a crappy promise kept, then a true sharing of hearts.

I am grateful you did share your opinion, but my head hurts too much to ponder more (I think lol, although I wouldn't be surprized, as it never does seem to stop (thinking this is a character defect today)).

Perhaps we can put a hold on the baseball dialogue and return this thread to its original purpose. If others wish to talk of baseball and such things, surely there is a better place for it. As much as I enjoy seeing the Red Sox beat the Yankees - especially in New York - I think enough is enough.

Cate, I'm sorry that it was your post that took me past my threshold for this. You've been a dear in your support of the thread and a great contributor here. Please don't take any offense at this.

:rose: to you, Cate, for wanting to spread good news.
