Finally, the thread returns to its original purpose.

OK - a new and entertaining question for readers: what's your favorite movie in which love is featured strongly - and why? I say it this way to avoid limiting the answers to ones that are essentially pure love stories.
...
Nice to see so many "faces" on this page ... the ones that have been around for a while and new.

At the moment I'd say my favorite is Frida - the Mexican artist who dared feast with courage on her life's measure of passion. It's not as much a love story as it is a rich depiction of passion and the spectrum of the love experience ... familial, brotherly/sisterly, romantic, erotic, lust ...

And it touches on so many of the experiences surrounding love: trust, heartbreak, fear, jealousy, shame, forgiveness, hope, fullness, emptiness, peace, anger, rage, bliss ...

When the movie ended I just sat there stunned. This movie had stirred more emotions than any other I've seen, more than I could contain in that moment. I was near silent afterward, for almost an hour, taking time to ride that swell of emotions. I'm grateful to have experienced this movie.

To love and passion,

Sky

Not sure it's my favourite but certainly one of them..."What Dreams May Come"...with Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding, Jr. No sex but lots of love...romantic and familial. And to top it off it's 'one of the great visual achievements in film history' (Siskel & Ebert). Just stunningly beautiful to watch. Had never heard of it until I saw it in the video store...so glad I did.

"Top Gun"... A typical love story... but also portrays the love between two friends... and the hurt and anguish that comes with loving and losing.

Another runner up would have to be "Green Mile"... Not a typical love story.. but shows the love mankind can have towards each other and also the extreme side of what can happen with the absence of love.

You mean there was a love story hiding behind all that great flying? ;)

Top Gun is a favorite in this house too.

Here is another movie choice on topic: A Touch of Class with George Segal and Glenda Jackson.

Her Vicky Alessio was the quintessential smart, strong independent woman. I wish I had met her 30 years ago.

I loved that movie "What Dreams May Come" it was beautiful, and so interesting, I do think we put ourselves in a kind of hell when we die if we feel that is where we belong, although I do not feel suicide is a reason to believe one must be in hell. It as a very good movie.

For me a movie I will always love, and it may sound odd, but "The Sound of Music". First of all, I love mountains, and the visuals in that movie were wonderful. But the love the characters had and what they gave up or gave into was immense and powerful. Each had to take a great risk for love.

Another movie I liked for its various love themes, was "Like Water For Chocolate" (sorry to tell you Yankee, a fiestier red head there was not, than the main character LOL) It depicted love in all its glory, both physically and emotionally. Romantic love, lust, family love as well. Well crafted movie!

Neat question there Yankee.

I remeber seeing that movie as well Cate ,and I agree that in order to have true love ,I feel we really have to 'ache' in some way for the person ,it's not all physical after all...

I feel its like a sense of a part of you that was missing ..has at last been found:rose:

Hey Yank, finally a question I can speak to without my habitual cynicism :)

The first choice for my favorite movie that speaks of love would have to be Life Is Beautiful. To experience love to such a depth has to be an awesome experience and must truly be a gift from God.

My favorite is "Spatula Girl," a sixties hidden classic. Kinda bdsm today.....it really showed the love between a gal and her man.

I also loved 'City Of Angels with Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan..the way he gave up his 'immortality to be with her...(sigh) sad ending tho:(

I agree with What Dreams May Come and City of Angels. I am not sure that I have really watched all that many other rmantic movies...although...if you want to go into the dark side of being inside one's head...I think Silence of the Lambs has a compelling relationship aspect to it, although I hated Hannibal.

Ummm...*thinks some more*

This movie is about love of family and oneself and romantic love as well...Although I doubt many have heard of it. Angie with Geena Davis is a fave of mine. More recently...I think Save the Last Dance had more to it than most people realized and is worth a second look from most.

That's all for now. ;)

i will also offer "Dances With Wolves" as a love story ...

and "Field of Dreams" as well ...

i find the committment of the heart to an ideal and the subsequent striving towards that ideal to be a moving and intimate expression of one's soul ...

great question MWY, ... really has kept me thinking, ... and the other responses have made my brain churn along as well.

No doubt you'll smack me for this (figuratively of course) - but I've yet to see Life is Beautiful.

I understand from those who have that it is one of the greats.

It's on my list - really it is. :)

I agree with both choices.

Interestingly, I was at the site of the filming of Field of Dreams just yesterday. Even played a little catch on the field. It was great fun.
