GB countless times, Canada, Mexico, Holland, Belgium, France, Bermuda, Turkey. Vacation except once to Canada for intercollegiate athletic competition. Several trips to GB were for weddings and funerals - so not vacations per se. Always have a valid passport. Was in England and Scotland last year to see family and sights.

I think everyone knows this...

The place is huge, so you can experience a hell of a lot of environments and climates without leaving the country, so I get why a lot of you guys would only ever vacation stateside.
But sometimes I wonder if the level of experience of other cultures impacts world views. So it'll be interesting to see what sort of person has what sort of experience.

Japan is so fucking ass-backwards with anything related to mental health. If you've ever sought treatment for any kind of drugs, ever had a DUI, ever had a behavioral outburst relating to a mental health problem, I can't remember all the other ones, but you have to have a shitton of documentation saying, I guess, that you're not gonna go crazy while you're there because they legit have the shittiest view on mental health and I didn't know that.

Never left the Americas. Do not currently have a passport I have been to Vancouver Canada and to Cancun and Rocky Point Mexico but I haven't been out of the country in probably 25 years.

I've got a couch in Ireland and I have another one in the south of France. So I need to get a passport but I sort of like being a non-existent person.

I have friends that could ensure my security in Mexico but I'm stil uncomfortable going. My brother the cop is completely fluent and obviously he would make a decent security detail all by himself. He just took his family and our mom down there last week and I probably should have considered tagging along but most of what's available there I can obviously get on this side of the border.

Maybe next time I'm in Tucson I'll stray over the border into Nogales

Japan has landing laws around drug convictions and criminal records. It has a law around mental capacity to know right from wrong but not around mental health problems as a blanket rule.

Suicide remains a problem and like many countries mental health issues are still an issue many people hide. Japan is a gorgeous county and it’s people are polite and kind and freaky and weird and beautiful and lovely. If they’ll let you in, you should definitely go some day.

It's not a blanket rule, but it's sure as hell not, "Do you know right from wrong". They want medical records and shit. No, it's a mental illness thing. They make it pretty clear.

Like I said, I could go but it'd be an ordeal. There are certain types of mental illness that they do have rules about. Like seriously, someone could be reading that, not know it might knock them out of going and get their hopes up.

Someone reading YOUR post might get the wrong idea that Japan is a terrible place to be as a traveller with managed mental health issues, which is factually incorrect. It’s just someone saying stuff that’s not right.

Japan IS a terrible place to be as a traveller with mental health issues. That was the point of my post. They need to get their shit together.

It's not like I'm the only one saying this. Japan is constantly coming under fire for how they handle mental health. You can't even bring your fucking meds to control your mental health problems. If you're on anything considered a stimulant, even if you do get approved to land, you can't have your meds. Do you know what happens if you go off meds cold turkey?

Like if you were taking, for example, Adderall, and you go to Japan for any reason, you can't bring it into the country. Not even a month's supply like you can other meds. You can't just go off of it. So you are, essentially, banned from Japan.

And if you've got meds that CAN be approved, you gotta get a Yakkan Shoumei, which is, again, a pain in the ass. And that's for ANY neurochemical medication, but some of them, they won't even let you have AT ALL.

Don't act like it's this magical happy weebo place that isn't actively working to keep crazy folks out because they are ass backwards in how they treat mental health. This is a legitimate problem that needs to be addressed.

Edit: I didn't appreciate being told I was rejected because I "Couldn't tell right from wrong". I was rejected for a plethora of reasons, but among them was the fact that I have a behavioral disorder, even though I've not had a behavioral outburst since I was a goddamn teenager. They wanted me to pull records showing I had NEVER had one. Hey, entire nation of Japan? You don't get diagnosed with a behavioral disorder if you've not had at least one behavioral outburst. Because that's part of the diagnostic process.
