Here in the UK, we refer to simple mathematical challenges as 'doing sums'

the following sums have different solutions

12 x 7 = 84

12 + 7 = 19

12 - 7 = 5

there, I did my sums!

I didn't get 9 though?

I don't really care WHAT it is technically. It's something I made up to be something, so that's the answer.

In Britain (where I am from) adding, multiplication, subtraction and division are colloquially known as 'sums' in kid-speak.... and by many adults.

Why am I having to explain this?
