I don't know...isn't it enough to assume that Kendra's right: that many couples do it because the thread isn't going anywhere anyway; or maybe they get caught up in the moment, or maybe they're hoping someone will jump in...there is probably a different reason for each instance.
I agree with previous posters: it's not like real life, pretty easy to just leave and find another thread to jump into. But as you've clarified, mrno, you're looking for the "why."
