Are they an endangered species? Aren't there laws protecting endangered species and making it a felony offense to hunt them?
There's a lot of argument over protecting them. I'm not sure what the current status is. There's no question that their essential hunting habitat, the edge of the sea ice, is melting out faster and that's going to be a problem for them.
Usually, even with endangered species protection, indigenous people who rely on hunting are given some sort of limited permission to hunt them anyway. That's how it is with whales.
