Hello,

I was wondering what the general consensus is regarding a contract marriage to allow one of the parties to achieve citizenship. It was suggested to me recently, and I thought I would bring it up here. Is it an immoral thing to do, do you think? This is in the US, mind you. I won't necessarily agree that it's fraud, if it's a real, legally valid marriage and both parties agree to treat it as such.

It does bring up a lot of particulars, though. Pre-nup, expectations and the issue of sex.

Call up the INS and see what they say.

You mightn't think it's fraud but it is a criminal offense.

Seriously flawed concept, in my opinion. You are dealing with an individual who wants to cheat their way in rather than use legitimate channels, what's going to go wrong next? I think it would be a travesty of both the law and the intention of marriage and will lead to no good.

I had a co worker who did this. She left the second it was legal to go and took him for everything he had.

I married a foreigner, but it was a love match. We also lived outside the U.S. for a time. If his plan was to marry me to gain U.S. citizenship, he's sure taking his time. Thirteen years and counting! Oh, and he's not yet applied for citizenship. Says he's not quite sure he wants to.

As for these contract marriages... too big a risk for too little return, imo.

That's great, good for both of you. :rose: But I know that there is a very real possibilty that if you go "business deal" and you are the American you are quite likely to get the "business'

What, no contract marriages in the Great North?!

:D Hmmm. Actually there is but the OP mentions being in the US so in the spirit of being polite I thought I would play along with that.

Really I think that any where you have immigration from poor countries to rich ones it is going to happen. It offers a shortcut around the obstacles they face in dealing with a different climate, language, culture or whatever.:(

:) It works for me. This is a very American board and there are only a handful of Canadians here besides myself. Since I enjoy the boarsd it seems reasonable to be nice. polite and keep out of everyones way. Thus I can just wander around as I please.:D

Say what they will about Canadians, but I fucking love you guys. You're smarter than us. If there was a place that had the government of Texas and the people of Canada, I'd move there tomorrow.

If I were ever to defect, it'd be north. BC most-likely. Lovely, lovely place that holds a special corner of my heart. :)

You'd enjoy a trip to Alaska.

I drove to Alaska (from Idaho) in 2004. Enjoyed every minute of it! Alaska wasn't quite what I expected, but BC and Yukon were absolutely wonderful surprises. I have very fond memories of that trip!

I cannot speak for Alaska at all but the striking places in Canada tend to be spread out all across the country. I would go with Banff and Jasper on the Alberta side of the mountains, Muskoka in central Ontario and Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia.

A hell of alot of driving.:D
