I have to qualify this because I had THE BEST shake from anywhere this weekend. A fresh blueberry shake from Blake's in Albuquerque. Heavenly!

I tried to verify this claim using independent means, but neither their website nor Yelp contained any pictures of these BEST shakes. I will have to take your word for it.

Imagine a shake that makes your cheeks cave in just enough, because it's the perfect viscosity. You have to work for it, but it's not impossible to actually get it in your mouth.
Now, notice that it's a beautiful mid-purple shade...not dark, but speckled with bits of blueberry skins on a lighter field.

I lived in Santa Fe in the 80's and fell in love with Northern NM. I visit as often as I can. Taos, Angle Fire, Red River, Jamez, etc...
Working with a small book store in Old Town Albq I am reading mysteries that are set in New Mexico, I get a little "touch" of the place that way - that and the green Hatch I keep stocked in the freezer.

There's this curve of the Batsto River, just after one of the bridges, with a small island in the middle, and the most luscious, wild blueberries you could ever dream of. I suspect that they're the ancestors of the farmed ones, hybridized for size but not nearly as much flavor. Once in a while you'll find a little farm stand in the Pine Barrens that sells these gems.
