STOCKHOLM — The world is nowhere near on track to achieve the ambitious temperature goals adopted in the landmark Paris Agreement on climate change, the United Nations said Thursday in a sobering report that warned of a human tragedy unless governments stepped up efforts to fight global warming.

The UN Environment Program said the world needs to slash its annual greenhouse gas emissions by an additional 12 billion to 14 billion metric tons by 2030 to have a chance of limiting global warming to 2 degrees Celsius.

I read the story about Tangier. Too bad about the erosion. Is that caused by climate change?
The story never told us how high the elevation of the island used to be or is now. But if it's as bad as they say, I'm sure Richmond (elevation 150 feet) must be a lot closer to being beachfront.

The elevation of Tangier Island is about three feet. It's never been much more than that in human history. It's a very small island, a little over one square mile.

Great Barrier Reef records worst coral bleaching, study finds

A new study has found higher water temperatures have ravaged the Great Barrier Reef, causing the worst coral bleaching ever recorded by scientists.

In the worst affected area, 67 per cent of a 700km swath in the north of the reef lost its shallow-water corals over the past eight to nine months, the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies based at James Cook University study found.

Scientists expect that the northern region will take at least 10 to 15 years to regain the lost corals, but are concerned a fourth bleaching event could happen sooner and interrupt the slow recovery.

The Earth is getting warmer. It has been steadily warming since the last ice age and will continue to do so until it starts to cool prior to the next Ice Age. The only unknown is to what degree is mankind specifically burning of fossil fuels perhaps exacerbating that trend

Global warming is a fact! The extent of human activities adding to it is evident but the degree debateable. The question is what are we going to do about it. Sit on our hands and watch as coastal cities become submerged. Wring our hands and blame governments as storms becomes more violent. Weep on one another's shoulders as droughts cause crop failures and price increases.

We need to be constantly engaging in rational discussions over how humans will deal with a changing world. Bog only knows that we bitch, complain and riot over man made changes like globalization, free trade and open borders. We can't just sit down and wait to die as the seas drown our cities and the sun bakes our land into an arid wasteland.

Can we cut back our fossil fuel burning and greenhouse gas emissions long enough for our profit driven industries to come up with viable means of living through global climate change?

Melting Antarctica ice sheets can take expected sea level rises of less than a foot to the upper limit of three feet by 2100. Okay, you and me are not affected but your kids and grandkids might just have to live with our decisions.

If the science is settled and all of America does everything called for by Obama to combat global warming/climate change, what exactly will happen with our temperature/climate?
I think that's a fair question.
