That wasn't a car - that was my bike; it does that when I use the engine to decelerate from a heavy acceleration. Sorry about that!

And that is a backfire; backfiring is when the engine backfires through the intake - kind of like a person vomiting. What you are hearing is a popping out the exhaust, usually caused by an overrich condition suddenly being ignited in the tailpipe - kind of like someone holding a match to a fart - just the opposite of a backfire.
