I was in Setubal last night about an hour before the Portugal match started collecting someone off the bus from Madrid.

It was joyful happy pandemonium, heaven help us when it all starts next week.

Later, I knew Portugal had won just be the cheers and honking of car horns. I can happily support Portugal and England with a foot in each camp, roll on the final - though my suspicion is neither will be there.

Never say never. ;)

Hey, I'm from Porto. Can't be any worse than it has been in the last couple of weeks. :D

Shuddup. :p

We wuz robbed

I didn't want to post this in the Euro 2004 thread, as I don't want to detract from Portugal's victory, and come off as sounding bitter (it's also a good excuse to bump the good old Brit Thread. :D)

This is just a bit of fun and a laugh (and it cheered me up lots).

I thought I'd pass along something that might amuse all of us downhearted English fans this morning.

I heard about this on Chris Moyles' Breakfast Show this morning. Urs Meier, the ref from last night, has his own website. It profiles him, bigs him up, whatever (my God, that man has an ego!). Anyway, he's also got a "Feedback" page HERE . He wants to know what we think of his refereeing, etc. HA!

He also has a fanclub. LOL!

Hmmm... Trying to decide what to say to him now...

Lou

Meier's box is full

Just tried to send Urs Meier an email asking him when he last had his eyes tested, but it was rejected - my German isn't much good but I presume his inbox is full. Wonder what the previous half-million English posters had to say???!!!

That pic was in The Mirror yesterday (I saw it when I went to my Mum's house. :p), along with loads of others. :D

P.S. I got my message to ARSE Meier in early. Doubt he read it, though. ;)

Nicely bumped Lou, and your reasons for bringing your remarks here are lamentable.

Shame the Portuguese element had to follow you!!!!

Hey Lauren???

LOL!

Cheers, Hon!

I'm not feeling quite so numb and raw about it now, but still can't help thinking about what could've been.

Ho hum, we've got Tim Henman now, to do us proud. JEEZ!

"Timmy Tension" has grabbed the nation.

Oh, purleeeeeeze!

Lou ;)

Just cos it's fun to tease you folks - and keep in mind my girlfriend is English before you jump on me :D - here is something from the UEFA website.

***

The Swiss referee Urs Meier, accused by some British press and part of the English national team of having ruled illegal a clear goal by Campbell on the last few minutes of regular time in the Portugal-England quarter-final, decided to break the silence and wasn't gentle. About the infraction committed by Terry over the Portuguese goalkeeper Ricardo, Meier had no doubt: "It was a clear foul. The goalkeeper was in his protection area. If in the future the same situation occurs again, I will evidently act in the same way." Following his statement, Urs Meyer responded emphatically to the English accusations: "What is happening is England looking for a scapegoat, and they ended up turning to me." The Swiss referee, once again attacked by the British tabloids in inelegant terms, left a message for the English team: "You should remember this is Euro-2004 and not the Premier League. What is permitted over there isn't anywhere else in Europe. I have merely enforced the rules of Euro-2004."

Meanwhile, the generality of international press, unanimously considers the issue raised by the English "ridiculous and pathetic," supporting Urs Meyer's decision on a play when John Terry stopped Ricardo from reaching the ball, in a scandalously flagrant manner.

I know that most paper over there only talk about Campbell being stronger than Ricardo Carvalho on that play, with no foul, but really, the worst blind is the one who doesn't want to see...

You should lay low and just root for Henman now. :)

Why "lay low"?

Do I have a reason to be afraid if I don't?

Should I hang my head in shame, because of how I interpreted an incident?

Should the linesman do the same thing?

I'm sorry, but I kept this issue out of your Euro thread, because I merely saw it as a bit of fun and, as I said, I didn't want to detract from Portugal's victory.

You've now brought this response to the Brit Thread, so maybe it's understandable if I react a little negatively to it.

As for me rooting for Henman: Ha-bloody-ha!!!

AW...I can feel the love...and I was already for a good cat fight, I guess I have to go back to watching Jerry Springer.:(

I'm glad you added a smiley there lauren, 'cos we ain't smiling about it.

Everything you've quoted has been in our own press here. It's old news.

The thing is, we know we played better during the first 15 minutes and when we were losing than we did throughout the rest of the game. The sad part is that for some reason, the England players resorted to playing 8 in defence and hoofing the ball upfield, instead of playing our natural game.

I suspect they had a subconscious fear of names like Figo & Costa etc, which led them to defend so deeply we could never get out.

If we'd played like we can and have, and like we did while we were losing, the blatantly poor refereeing and penalty spot debacle wouldn't have been an issue as we'd quite likely have beaten Portugal by 2 goals.

The referee was playing for the home side. Of that I have no doubt. How else do you explain Rooney having a free kick given against him when it was his foot that was broken? What foul did he commit?

There were a number of other very poor decisions that went against England too. Two against Darius Vassel who was blatantly fouled but had the decision given against him.

All of that said, Meier may well have had a point when he said that what happens in the English game is not allowed in Europe.

The English game of football thankfully still retains a lot of it's original "hardship".

Europeans who come to the Premiership often take half a season to come to terms with our game, because it is so physical.

This has been refined a lot by continental managers coming in, but the toughness is still there. It's what makes our game the most exciting in the world and it's why a lot of the top players in the world, who aren't necessarily just in the game for the millions, come to England.

I won't say the money isn't a part of it for them, of course it is.

Anyway, that's my rant for the evening done!

Thank you for your time.

Well, I'm not going to post more about that in this thread, but since you ask, Rooney should have gotten a yellow card, if the ref had played by the rules on that play. His foul was to play without a boot, and it is supposed to come with a yellow card. Look it up. ;)

Fer Gawds sake people are you all still whinging about the footy!
Its over, finito, bin an gone.

As an aside the pup wanted a Rooney or Lampard shirt at the weekend, not one in all of town but plenty of Beckham shirts, nobody seems to want them for some reason.

I feel so sorry for him with all that pressure NOT! gimme his money and I'll see if I can cope with it all. but no look at his other half I'll stay poor and suffer after all than face that!

 :cattail:
