Blackfish...pass it on

Just because some humans are wired up to enjoy being entertained by animals with no concern for the animals' welfare, doesn't mean that we all have to accept and allow it.

Just because some humans are wired up so they are squicked out by animals being used for entertainment, and are overly concerned about animal welfare doesn't mean the rest of us have to stop it.

Verstehen sie?

Nope.

I don't see it as "overly" concerned. I think of it as very basic empathy and ethics. And I think that the majority of people who enjoy whale and dolphin shows would be equally "squicked" if they knew the truth. Some wouldn't be, I agree, but I firmly believe they are the minority.

Furthermore, just to make this perfectly clear, I’m not just some soft-hearted, tear jockey who gets sad because I watched Free Willy and felt bad for the poor widdle whale. This is not about being squicked out.

I have spent thousands of hours on the water, hundreds with wild marine mammals. I have studied whales and dolphins, spoken with specialists and marine biologists. I have been passionate about this topic for a very long time. I’ve heard all the opposing arguments, all can be refuted by science, logic, and, as I said, basic human ethics.

On most issues, I will always retain at least a scrap of open mindedness and a willingness to accept that my position could be wrong. Not on this one. Never. This is my line in the sand.

So, no, you don’t have to do anything. You can patronize Seaworld, or maintain a dispassionate ambivalence, or whatever you like. I’m still going to keep talking to the folks who might want to listen, who might care, who might change their minds. I believe most humans do not support abuse of this nature.

I've posted on this board many times that I think the urge to rape comes with the testosterone territory in most human males.

Just because some males are wired up so they are squicked out by non-consent and overly concerned about female sensibilities...

Should we try to stop it? Hell yes, we should.

Obviously there's an ethical distinction to be made between the rape of a human and the life-long abuse of an orca or bear. But that distinction doesn't make it ok to abuse non-human creatures, even if the urge to do so comes naturally to some humans.

"Overly concerned" would be the people freeing the mink so they can run off and get squashed in traffic.

This isn't so theoretical and out there that you can say it's the same thing. I'm fine drawing distinctions between a lab rat and a human so I'm also fine drawing them between a dolphin and a cow.

Orcas.
From what limited knowage I have of them.
There are three classes of Orcas ones that stay in the Alantic and ones that stay in the Pacific Ocean.
Then there are what I consider the Hell Angles of Ocas, they go where ever they damn please and do what ever they want.
These are the are the ones that perpatrate the nasty stuff stuff people are refurring too.

If you're a Hells Angle and I insulted you too fucking bad.

I wish I had a nickel for every guy who said they "hate cats" like it's a macho man thing.

Yeah, because we're socialized to think that cats are "girls only" pets, and a man isn't allowed to like a "girls only" thing lest his oh-so-tenuous grasp on masculinity be RIPPED AWAY and he grow a vagina instantly.

This may be true for some. My dislike of cats comes from feeling my breathing apparatus turn itself inside out every time a cat comes near. I also find the vast majority of internet-based cat worship to be the worst kind of cloying.

Okay Scrooge. :D

Some cats are cute or amusing online, in pictures. I can only handle them in person in small doses because I also put my own ability to breathe first. I have a few friends whose cats I visit with sometimes, when I'm heavily medicated. I've also had a nasty infection from a single cat claw puncture, and generate enough of my own hair/fiber bunnies that I really don't need any help, so I find cohabitation completely undesirable.

I think orcas are magnificent in the wild, though I'm more fond of dolphins and belugas.

Then again, I saw three barn cats "playing" with an unfortunate field mouse just this morning. It's all survival of the fittest, whether it's a not-too-bright mouse or a weak whale calf. Nature simply isn't all warm and fuzzy.
