I have always heard the best mistress is one who was a sub at one time.

The "rising through the hierarchy" thing is definitely present in Old Guard leather culture. You had to start out on the bottom before you could get to the top. (At least I think...others - Stella? - could correct me.)

I've always thought it just made sense, too. You should know how the whip feels so you know what you're inflicting when you use it. (Or whatever other thing you're doing.)
