Toph paused in her steps, smirking a bit as Katara brought up the past events of Aang's training with her. "I listened to you then. Really. I just.. chose not to follow up on it. There are times when praise and boosting someone's ego can do wonders. Morale- yeah, its wonderful. But to have an ego about yourself without something to back it up is like putting up a mud wall. Sure, its there... but what good does it do? You better have something good waiting behind it. Aang's got it all in there. The stubborn side of an Earthbender... but he's also taken in the gentle side of a Waterbender."
Turning back around, she rested her hand against the rough rocky wall once again, listening to the tone of her friend's voice. "Okay. I'll give you that... or take that for myself, I guess is the better way of putting it. I helped him see that being stubborn can have its advantages. But to fight back needs a strong enough reason. He needs a conviction worth fighting for. I challenged him back then, made him stand up for himself, his stuff, his own abilities. He's standing up for even more than that now..."
Moving the hand from the wall to instead rub against her stomach, she made a slight face, followed by a light belch. "Sorry. That tea..." She trailed off, giving a quick shrug. "Bleh. Not good that way either." Continuing to make the face, she returned to her stool, plopping back down and folding her hands across her lap.
Silence lingered for a moment, Toph listening to the sounds of Katara's movements, the catch in her breathing. Letting out a light sigh, she let her head fall back against the stone wall, moving her hands to fold behind her hair. "You need to find the Earthbender in you too, Katara. I've set myself to the fact that this thing won't overtake him. I won't let it, and I refuse to believe that it will. Be stubborn. Don't accept anything that you don't want. It's the firm will of an Earthbender that lets them move something set in stone..." She scoffed lightly, taking one of her hands from the current pose and waving it into the air. "You can move icebergs and whole rivers... and I -know- you can be just as stubborn as me. That's why we used to butt heads all the time."
