Climbing up the nearly vertical side of a cliff when my foothold crumbled, leaving me sliding and grappling for a new foot or handhold about 60 feet above the rocks below. Adrenalin is a great resource.

Surprisingly enough, I really haven’t had that many. I think, it would be a tie between the time this guy in my group flipped at the bottom of a rapid, and I was at the top of the rapid. There were people around him when it happened so I wasn’t too worried until I saw him out of his boat, swimming towards a strainer. I peeled out of the eddy I was in and just blew through the rapid. I got down to him before he got into the strainer and had him grab my boat as I pulled him to a little rock island. By then the cold water, combined with his advanced age, had sapped every bit of his strength and energy, so he was unwilling and unable to swim down to his boat. So I had to leap frog him from rock island to rock island using my throw rope to get him down stream to his boat.

The other time I was completely terrified was I was sitting at a stop sign at the bottom of a hill, when this car coming the other way towards me out of control and on fire. As it rolled past me, I could feel the heat.
