Ariel Sharon embodied Zionist ideals that still stir most Israelis.

By Mark LeVine

As a massive stroke ended Ariel Sharon's tenure as Israel's prime minister, commentators around the world were predicting negative consequences for the long-stalled Israeli/Palestinian peace process.

Love him or hate him--and there are few people who don't have strong feelings about Sharon--it is almost universally agreed to that during the past five years he has matured into an elder statesman. To the surprise of many, Sharon's powerful commitment to the "Land of Israel" as envisioned by Zionism's founding fathers had apparently been tempered by the realization that sacrifices and hard choices were necessary to guarantee the survival of the state he helped build and, from the perspective of Israelis if not most Palestinians, defended for the past half-century.

Yet the pessimism over the future of Israel's negotiations with the Palestinians is unwarranted. This is because for all his singularity as a political figure, Sharon's core beliefs and goals represent the mainstream of Zionist and Israeli thought and policy during the past century. He was the "bulldozer" and the architect of Israel's settlement policies; he famously urged Israelis to "move, run, grab more hills, expand the territory" based on his belief--one long shared by Zionist and Israeli leaders--that "everything that's grabbed will be in our hands. Everything we don't grab will be in their hands."

Just comprehending this much text is difficult for some. ;)

I think the disengagement from Gaza went against many of the extreme zionists ideals.

The idea of a "Greater Israel" has been effectively dead for decades, Sharon just formalized it. Now it's going to be a war of annihilation with the Hamas freaks at the helm.

Why does this read like an obituary? He's not dead yet. Like most stroke victims, he just wishes he was.

It made perfect sense for the greater Zionist ideal to remove a few settlers and turn Gaza into a large Prison state with Israeli managed borders and airspace.
The Israeli economy was terminal a couple of years ago just trying to maintain control there so it was an economic strategy that saved Israel from financial collapse and freed resources to snatch the more prime lands on the West Bank.

The joke in all this is that the sycophantic Americans could be made to pay recompense at grossly inflated valuations for the Settlers homes in Gaza and fund new expansions in the West Bank, including The Wall. It was a win/win for the Sharon Team.

If you read the Israelis 2000 strategy, they propsed a war of oppression against their opposers with no quarter given until submission.

THe Hamas freaks know exactly what they are dealing with, yet still persue their cause against the Israeli freaks at the helm.

You should read more Israeli government documents and not rely on the softbrain mush served up on Fox. Go to the source.

I suspect there willl be a massive genetic hemorrhage in the Middle East before too much longer.

Israels problems are twofold.

The seperatist policy of Judaic lineage ties them to a low reproductive rate. Ask Ishmael what this means. It's not good news for Israeli Jews who are destined to be a minority in their own country, another Fiji if you will.

Also Jews worldwide, support Israel by way of the religious tie,but no-one wants to go live there.

Meanwhile the Palestinians are locked out of productive lives in their Israeli guarded Banyustans so are sitting at home fucking up a formidable army of rabid Jew haters.

It doesnt take an Einstein to see that Israeli investoments are only OK for the short term.
