Anyone remember when MTV first come on the air?

I suspect that there are lots of people that aren't old enough to even know that the m in MTV stood for music.

I think you are right. I just thought I might flail about to see to see if there are ancient listers besides me.

Maybe those kids might like the music or at least know we didn't grow up listening to elevator music.

MTV did elevator music. It was just the elevator music of the 80s.

Yes I remember the start of MTV quite well. There weren't that many videos out at that time, yet I would find myself staying up to see the the next one until I'd fall asleep in front of the TV. I thought I wrote the song "Relax" because I first heard it while asleep in front of the TV.
Here's video that was considered edgy and artistic at the time:

In the past you never had to think what Billy Joel was thinking about because he made a video about it. Remember when he fell in love and announced it on MTV?

Oh my yes. We hadn't had cable that long in our area and I remember coming home from school and immediately turning on MTV. I would pull my books from the backpack and sit on the floor using our coffee table as my desk for homework. I remember my grandmother fussing about how there was no way I was learning anything with that trash on the television while trying to study. Lol. It was actually beneficial for me as I retained the information more accurately by associating what I was studying with what video was on at the time. Watching George Michaels made algebra much easier to understand.

My favorite GM video:

Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

Breaking the rules :)

Much (formerly and commonly known as MuchMusic) is a Canadian English language Category A specialty channel owned by Bell Media. The channel first launched on August 31, 1984, under the ownership of CHUM Limited, as one of the country's first ever specialty channels.

MTV itself was not permitted in Canada because of Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) restrictions on format protection. However, no such restrictions exist in the United States, where CHUM attempted to compete with MTV through MuchUSA (now the unaffiliated Fuse).

The first video played on MuchMusic was "an early music-to-film synchronization short from the 1920s which featured Eubie Blake performing Snappy Songs." The first video made specifically for television air play was Rush's "The Enemy Within"
