Anyone for a nightcap?

The prevalence of high-fructose corn syrup in our diets is appalling. In fact, based on a recent conversation on the subject, I recently checked the label on my beloved Marshmallow Fluff. No ingredients listed. Hmmmm....wonder why? A check of the manufacturer's (and there's no better word for it: these people are not cooks) website reveals that it, indeed, is mostly HFCS.

I was so bummed that I had to change my av back to something more natural.

You are my hero, right now.
I love you, man.

Really....I do..

I am currently experiencing a life of a European parent, who spent much of that life in the US. Said parent, who was always a responsible/shopper/cook is now dealing with diabetes. (Of course, said parent enabled my fried bologna on Wonder Bread habit). As remarkable they were as cooks. That HFCS just snuck in there.....

And Yanks...I so missed Spencer. It really is hard to talk to a sandwich. Even a good sandwich.

See I don't eat that. I've never eaten Mashmallow Fluff. Can't remember the last time I had bologna. No junk food. Period. So I was feeling pretty smug.

But what about yogurt? Even say, lowfat vanilla yogurt. There is sweetener, preservatives, and the milk that went into the yogurt? What were the cows fed? Crappy ass corn, no doubt. Corn, corn, corn.

ETA: I'm rethinking everything.

Ummm.....yes. Corn, corn, corn.

And not even tasty corn.

Although Fluff and PB on WB is right up there with my fried bologna sandwich in terms of love food. Even though....

And, in case anyone was wondering, I did not win the Powerball last night.

And yes, ITW, our food pretty much bites.

I'm at that part, actually. The farm sounds amazing. I've already joined a local CSA fruit/vegetable share with some other folks. I'm getting a half share. Perhaps next year we'll do a full. We have a few sources for local farm meat. Today we bought some buffalo sausages, pork loin, and ground lamb, all from local, organic farms using sustainable practices. The meat is by far the priciest. I'm trying to get us eating less of it though. Tonight we had the sausages with local salad greens. Fab!

I've talked M into getting food weekly at the Local/Organic stands near the Guthrie theater all this spring/fall. I'm really excited about it, actually.

I got into making my own yogurt, which sounds so hippy dippy and labor intensive, but it's really no harder than making a batch of iced tea or something.

I use Organic Valley milk, though, so again, corn, but I'm honestly slightly less worried about corn via cow or oil than corn via corn syrup. Flavored yogurt is a no-go for me completely, other than honey or something.

Oh yeah! I've read about making your own yogurt. I actually just got hooked on some good local milk and there is no going back. Yummmm.

See, it's hard here. While I know it's bad, Land O' Lakes milk tastes just as awesome as anything else here. I'm in dairy paradise. I at least always buy the non hormone, but I admit sometimes the factory farm pricing gets even me.

The pricing is a struggle. I'm not going to lie. I'm trying to get creative about the meat thing for sure.

In the Land of Hysterical Hijacks

For several years, my Sunday nights (or sometimes Monday lunchtimes) were reserved for The Sopranos. The other half of the Board of Directors chez Yank couldn't stand all the profanity (her phrasing) but it never quite registered with me.

Until today. Here is every profanity ever uttered in a Sopranos episode, in just under 30 minutes.

Go ahead....laugh your effing ass off. :D

Mom? Is that you? lol

Does drinking Robitussin count?

I hate being sick.

Especially like this. One of those "once every five year" kicks in the whatever.

Hell, if drinking Woolite could work for Gene Littler in Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Sex, surely Robitussin counts for you, dear LB.

Hope you're starting to recover, at least. :rose:

Cheers! Feel better, LB.

Mmm, gentle cleansing.

 Are you talking about the golfer? Or the Woody Allen movie? I don't remember Woolite-drinking with either. Although I have only seen the movie once. Sad to say, while still in the theaters. (I was underage, just for the record. And that is the real truth.)

Cheers! Feel better, LB.

Thank you.

Thank you both. I do actually feel better today. I don't sound better, but I feel better.

T minus two hours until coconut crusted wahoo and a martini! Yumma, yumma, yumma.

Oh screw it, I'm having the martini now.

Cheers all.

Keroin,
I hope that was a good martini!

Question for all, food related...

I am not normally much of a TV watcher, but I saw an ad today for northern Pacific Cod. Tell me if I am mistaken...but is Cod not an Atlantic fish? How did they migrate all the way to the Pacific?

I sort of get how vegetables start growing in foreign environments. (Not that I like those particular veggies). I just don't really understand how fish start showing up in different oceans.

I have a few thoughts here...actually many thoughts. But am interested in all of yours because sometimes I find I can be a bit of a food Nazi. I'm trying to be more sociable in this regard.

And if prompted, I will happily discuss the issue of slavery among illegal immigrant tomato pickers in Florida. The unfortunate people who are picking tomatoes so we can eat them in winter. But this is an other subject.

This is what I found hope it's what you wanted to know.
Whats wrong with being a food Nazi? I want to know what I'm eating and how far it traveled to get to me.

The martini was lovely, as always, but the wahoo...oh boy, the wahoo. Is there a word similar to "yummy" that means "yummy to the 10th power"? Tonight I will have Cajun wahoo nuggets - I can hardly wait!

Speaking of food, I had a little laugh in the grocery store a few days ago. Our island is serviced by a supply ship that comes once a month and, since most of the people here are poor, the selection is limited. (I could probably tell you every item on every shelf just from memory). Anyway, I was in the store buying an apple. The supply ship for this month had still not arrived and everything was pretty picked over. There was a small pile of apples in the cooler and I sifted through them to find the least-bruised/rotten one possible. As I did this, I flashed on an image of the cornucopia of fresh fruit and veggies in the grocery mega-stores back home and how I might pick through a pyramid of apples to find the "perfect" specimen.

Now, if half the apple is edible, I consider that a good find.

When I'm back in civilization, I will no doubt return to my principles and strict dietary habits but I think it's been good to have this kick in the ass and get used to appreciating the mere existence of any food.

I love perspective.

Just rambling as I put off working.

Sigh...I inadvertently had too much wine earlier. My house is a stye. How did that happen? Made a fab dinner though.

So, trying to guide a hijack to a better place, I thought I would attempt to initiate the discussion of fruit pizza here. More specifically, a discussion of pizza that does not involve any tomato based sauce...

I have shared these recipes, all untested, with Yanks. My email to him follows:

I bookmarked this recipe for a caramelized apple and almonds pizza that I thought sounded very good (No cream cheese in sight). I haven't made it yet...I might try to this weekend and if so will report on the results.

I also thought that this tiramasu pizza sounded interesting...

And then you (meaning Yanks in my original email) might like this one that calls for marshmallow creme. He would, of course, substitute Fluff.

And just for the record, I would never, ever serve anything with fruit cocktail. To anyone. Period.
(I take that back, I did used to buy the little six-packs of fruit cocktail like things to pack in the kids school lunches. It was a brief phase.)

I find it interesting that labels (as in what we identify as important food items) can raise such emotional responses. This is not derogatory to ITW, because I am certain I have been guilty of this myself. But I also see it with amazing passion among my family members who have really diametrically opposed emotional responses to food.

I am telling you, again. Food= sex=emotion. Or they should at least be equal on Maslow's hierarchy. Which, I seem to recall, are two steps apart. I feel a digression of my own making coming on...
