Anyone for a nightcap?

In Defense of Food spends a lot of time talking about how we've gotten so concerned with the nutritional value of XYZ, and so skittish about "bad" things instead of the big picture, that despite all the low fat/bad carbs/blahblahblah we're actually eating a worse "healthy" diet than we did at the turn of the century. We've screwed with nutritional balance in the name of science, and our bodies can't cope - which is why we're eating "healthier", but obesity, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc are through the roof.

(Oh, BTW - sipping a white merlot the roomie handed me)

White merlot? What is that? I hear ya on the worse health diet. What's with organic oreos ya know?

Oh, Sir_Winston...you should read Omnivore's Dilemma. It is really rather enlightening. And it may make you think twice about which beef you buy to grind yourself. Really, I'm not so sure its the fat you have to worry about as much as the sugar. OK, really, there's a balance.

But corn-fed beef is such an f***ing marketing ploy. Cows are not meant to naturally look for corn. Read the book if you can.

Balance is good. I'm going for less meat overall these days, and I try to avoid processed foods and the sugars that come with them religiously.

White merlot is a bit like white zinfandel, though it's either a little less or a little more sweet (can't recall and I know this only by reputation).

Balance is very good.

So this week's discussion should be around "what are we actually eating and how far away is it from what nature intended."

Along the same lines, has anyone read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver? Another really amazing read.

Makes me re-think desert living. Among other things.

No! No weekly discussions here. That was me, just being kind of like, the line leader.

Talk about anything! (Except bugs, because appararently ITW does not deal well...)

Please don't bow out...the more the merrier!

i have a problem too. I can't kill things.

I don't kill......I resuscitate

So I had to put it in a glass and put him outside.
*applause*

You know, Minx - no foolin' around - this is absolutely the right thing to do. And it takes a lot more courage than stomping! :)

The more the merrier. Agreed.

Talk about bugs I can deal with! ;)

This is why we need you here...no one in the US, anyway, ever says they were "throwing (their) toys out of the pram." Consider yourself an ambassador...

I just love the internet.

~LB

(So what does throwing the toys out of the pram actually mean, anyway?)

*laugh* the same as ''spitting my dummy out'' or ''taking my ball back''

.......generally it means someone is sulking and they aren't playing any more!:D

So I just learned 3 new phrases tonight!

This will help whenever I make it on holiday to your end of the world.

Thanks for sticking around. :rose:

Sooo hot here today plus stress levels have peaked.

My cup runneth over and not in a good way :mad:

Sparkling burgundy. Yum.

Minx, I hope you've gained control of that cup.

For me, I am mourning the end of the weekend and not really excited about having to start all over again tomorrow. And try as I might, I didn't even come close to completing everything I needed to do this weekend. Arghh...

However I am drinking tea. And there's a fire starting in the fireplace (its a bit nippy here, by our standards) And I may watch a little holiday movie to perk me up a bit.

Cheers all!

I'm remarkably content, after feeling pretty cranky since Friday. Probably before.

I still have pics turned off btw. I'm actually afraid somehow a spider picture will find me! Not saying this to compain at all. I'm sure LB would smack me around at this point (wait, I like that sort of thing...) if I were to complain! No, I am just surprised by how bad the phobia is. I can still see the huntsman pic in my head and it totally freaks me out.

No worries. I promise never, ever to post spider pics again.

I hate spiders in real life. In a really big freak-out sort of way. So I appreciate where you are coming from. As far as it concerns me, please feel free to turn pics back on.

Never smacked a woman. Not going there for now... ;)

(feeling feisty right now)

Quite sober tonight, with little likelihood of repairing that condition (or interest, to be candid).

Nor am I. I've quit drinking hundreds of times. :D

Lets make a New Year's Res. Maybe.
We can start a new thread. "Anyone for water" or something like that.

OK, that sounds pretty lame....

But every time wine creeps into my regular diet I find an extra four or five pounds. And when I keep those pounds off, my blood pressure is happy. So, I have this little circle going. Keeping the bp down should be my lofty goal, I think....

(Repeats to herself: "Vitamin water is good...")

I used to be uber disciplined about food and exercise to keep the cholesterol in check, but the the doc put me on meds anyway and the discipline went kaput.

Oh! But I think I can stay off the meds if I keep my weight down. (And believe it or not, we're talking about 5-8 lbs. Amazing to me.) Well, Dr Cardio hasn't been consulted, but my GYN thinks so. :D

Besides, I am resisting being on a daily med regimen. I'm not old enough. Really I am not. So sayeth me. To whomever is listening. ;)

There's a couple of reasons why I relented on the meds. First, since it's a statin drug, it will help stave off Alzheimer's, which seems to run in my family.
