For his role as Matt in 'The Descendants' - right?

Do we all agree with this?

I haven't seen it. I'm always behind when it comes to this stuff, though I did just rent "the help" on ppv.

...but I'm likely to vote for George not matter what the question. -thumpa thump-

Gary Oldman in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy".

He's the most underrated actor and his bickering/barking about how shallow the awards are unless you spend much time prostituting yourself the way American politicians do, well, finally got him a nod from the Academy!

I'm so happy for him but he hasn't a chance.

P.S. I adored him in 'Romeo is Bleeding' first and foremost, then went backward and frontward from there - he killed with his version of Dracula

He's actually better than Brad Pitt in 'Moneyball' in this film. And I really fucking loved Brad in that one. Thought it his best, ever.

How dare the two hottest men on earth be close friends and release two of the best films of their lives in one year.

Clooney already has one and winning the Golden Globe doesn't guarantee you get the Oscar.

Grrr. I havent seen that one either....christ, I need to veg in front of the tv for a day!

...and agreed on all other points.

True, so true. But HB, do you really see Gary Oldman winning with an upset?

I don't know that it will be an upset. The Academy doesn't like to be dictated to by popular opinion. They proved that by their choice for Best Director and Best Film last year. Choosing Clooney will be bowing to popular opinion.

I've heard that the Tinkers movie that Gary Oldman shined in comprised of all the Brit actors one could snag and was so awful that, well, it really wasn't watchable.

I've seen Clooney and liked what I saw, just not Gary Oldman. But oh how I know how he can act. He got passed by the Golden Globes but finally achieved an Oscar nom.

I actually like this... George Clooney vs. Gary Oldman at this point of the thread.

Wonder how many times Gary Oldman comes up during searches of mine. Probably a few dozen. :)

Well, it's been a while since I posted this thread.

George Clooney for the win still, yes? Or will Brad Pitt pull an upset for his amazing performance in 'Moneyball'?

Will I shit my slacks if Gary Oldman finally wins something?

I'm DEADLOCKED for Best Actress Viola Davis for her role in 'The Help' even against Meryl Streep and those talented others. Viola Davis gonna win and make Halle Berry look stupid for winning for her role in 'Monster's Ball' when she really only acted when her fat kid died in the E.R.. Air-humping Billy Bob Thorton doesn't count. What Viola Davis did, does. So does being all black and not half black and discounting your white mother during your acceptance speech. Right, Obama?

Clooney is a Kentuckian, right? This isn't a repeat of Vonnegut for me?

My god, he was just an awful Batman...

I think Clooney turned in an amazing performance in The Descendants, so it wouldn't upset me if he won.

BUT, I don't think we can discount Jean Dujardin for The Artist. (I haven't seen the movie, but I know he's getting a ton of buzz.)

I think Johnny Depp is a Kentuckian raised in Florida.

I blame the super gay director for Clooney's Batman. He had him wearing erect nipples and a super big cockpiece.

Forget his name, but the director is superduper gay and lost track of the BatMan series, focused on his own pleasures.

You know, I liked The Help, but I am surprised it's on the list....I didn't think any of the acting was stellar, just the premis of the movie itself. And Viola...while, I adore her, to me an Oscar should go to someone who plays a roll that was made for them. Anyone could have acted in that movie and it still would have been the same.

Ugh, you're making this hard. Ask SweetSoftKiss and her past Lit Oscar Picks threads, I like to make my Oscar picks and win.

How can someone who doesn't speak an audible line win in this category? Besides, like Gary Oldman said on Chelsea Lately, you really have to hustle and sell yourself if you want a win. It's just like politics.

Oldman is probably my favorite actor...love to see him win.

Pitt has a Clooney jinx...always one behind with the timing, it seems.

So, fuck, do we all just vote for Gary Oldman to spite the Clooney/Pitt jinx?

I've seen both Clooney and Pitt films and I have to say, I liked Brad Pitt in 'Moneyball' better. I really did. It was something I thought even my Grandfather would have treasured for however many minutes it lasted.

Hmm, I bet the Academy breaks the tie and gives it to the dude from 'The Artist'

Some TV segment said the Academy voters were something like 70% white males over 60 or something. Maybe I misquoted the age, but it was up there.

So The Artist dude has a shot. Saw it the other week...a catchy movie.

Either Clooney or the guy from The Artist. It does seem to be the darling, though.

Nobody Reads Me In Here

This much is true.
