Since you did manage to take a larger insertion in the past, I have to wonder if the problem isn't more psychological than physical.

To make a few suggestions, try a warm bath first, and perhaps try using a small vibrator or vibrating beads to loosen up. An enema beforehand can also be both physically and psychologically relaxing.

Positioning can make a difference too. Experiment a bit and see if different positions make it easier.

It's much more involved than those three words. If you can't relax and be comfortable with your partner, it's gonna be a bad experience in most every cases.
