“Patriotism, religious faith, having children and other priorities that helped define the national character for generations are receding in importance to Americans, a new Wall Street Journal-NORC poll finds.”

“Some 38% of respondents said patriotism was very important to them, and 39% said religion was very important. That was down sharply from when the Journal first asked the question in 1998, when 70% deemed patriotism to be very important, and 62% said so of religion.”

“The share of Americans who say that having children, involvement in their community and hard work are very important values has also fallen.”

“The only priority the Journal tested that has grown in importance in the past quarter-century is money, which was cited as very important by 43% in the new survey, up from 31% in 1998.”

The youth can't afford children.

Hard work doesn't pay off like it used to for the majority of folks.

Religious institutions are more concerned with legislating morality than trying to be community supports.

For the past 50 years we've done an excellent job of prioritizing the wealthy.

And it shows.

America isn't working for the majority of Americans anymore.

Values from over half a century ago aren't values from today.

How sad for those people who still want them.

@adrina I totally agree with you , craziness and greed have taked over and rationism

Priorities have changed, some money driven, some society. Big Corp has always been greedy , but it seems more so nowadays. The priorities in my older eyes should be affordable healthcare for all, accountability for all, no one escapes their wrong doing. There are more, since I feel the for mentioned items are only ypthe ‘tip of the iceberg’.

Having children is a very important value? For whom?
The Journal-NORC survey polled 1,019 people from March 1-13, mostly online. The margin of error was plus or minus 4.1 percentage points. For further breakdown of the respondent demographics you’ll need to get past the paywall to access the details. It includes responses by age and party affiliation.

I wonder if it also includes data on geographic location. Because it seems to me that would be an important data point which most polls don't bother trying to overcome because it's a lot easier to get 1000 responses in major metro areas than in rural ones.

However, when asking if faith is important it's probably better to ask that question where people believe faith and personal responsibility are important instead of places where people believe it's ok to just drive by and shoot each other.

Whether the poll did that or not I don't know because I'm not going to pay someone to provide that info when it should be right up front with the compiled results.

Unfortunately they don’t show responses by geography. The differences in responses by age are significant. As others have noted on this thread, many younger folks can’t afford children. Not surprising given the low percentage of young respondents that value hard work.

That lack only indicates that the polling was done the easy way by asking for responses where there are the most potential respondents in the shortest amount of time spent asking.

Having kids is easy. Raising kids is easy. What's hard is telling those who want to live like a Kardashian on a ditch diggers income that kids aren't status symbols.

We're at the end of our civilization. The values that led Europeans to conquer most of the world and exploit its resources don't work anymore. We'll need a few centuries to find and agree on new values for the next civilization.

Was that a Chicago poll? :D

How does it make sense that the subjects of the study would be easier to sample from one place when the surveys are done by phone? 🤔

Have you ever heard of an area code selection?

Yes. So why would it be too much work for a pollster to simply dial numbers outside of their area?

HisHarpy makes it sound like there’s some great hardship to dialing out of area. How old is that dinosaur?

He could be younger than you for all I know. So, how is he wrong?

History tells us that in this nation, people who cannot afford children had large, extended families.

The real story here is the twofold story of education and self-centered hedonism created an Idiocracy, because trust me, just go to Walmart and you will find families who truly cannot afford children toting around several of their brats.

The type of "can't afford" that you're talking about is the mentality of, I cannot afford to spend on anything but ME!!!

And then those that "can't afford children" become teachers and activists so they can fuck up other peoples children.

Tell that to the folks who work three gig jobs just to make ends meet all while living out of a van.
