Alaskans? Anyone out there?

We're having a blizzard. The federal building has closed down and they're warning people not to be driving. Yeehaw!!

Time to to go home and hunker in? Stop by the wine shop?

I thought the snow had quit here, but I looked out and it's coming down again.

I have some good, unboxed:cool: wine at home. I was thinking of making some margaritas or piña coladas and cranking up a little Buffett since I'm grilling steaks. I'm glad I put the cover back on the grill. I hate having to shovel snow. :)

The wind blew the cover off my grille. :(

Hello Alaska,

Hi! Everyone I use to live in Alaska. I was stationed at Ft. Richardson, Anch. to be exact. Is there anyone else here from that area? Has it changed at all since oh about '96.

I had visited all over the state though Wasilla, Delta Junction, North Pole...lol, Fairbanks.

My local hangout used to be The Cabin.:)

Icing problems fueled by high winds waylay voyages of two state ferries in Southeast

The state ferry LeConte had to delay its return to Juneau Sunday evening and stay in Hoonah over the weekend.

Roger Wetherell of the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities explains the vessel was traveling between Juneau and Angoon Saturday evening when the crew measured sustained winds to about 70 knots. One gust was measured at 120 knots.

Wetherell says strong winds created drastic sea spray causing excessive icing to the ship's radar and GPS and even encased engine room vents and air intakes.

The LeConte spent Saturday night through mid-day today (Monday) in Hoonah.
.
While in Hoonah, Wetherell says the crew was able to remove ice from the vessel, its navigational radar and GPS and deice its lifesaving equipment, the fast rescue boat, and the life boats.
.
The sailings of the fast ferry Chenega Saturday and Sunday was also effected by the high winds and freezing spray.

It was rescheduled to travel to make up a trip between Juneau and Sitka and back today (Monday) with its normal Juneau to Haines run taken over by the Malaspina.

Winds knock over scores of AML containers
High winds knocked over about 30 containers at the Alaska Marine Lines facility at the Rock Dump.

Eric Badger, the company's port director, says he was notified by police at about nine Sunday morning.

A damage estimate is pending inspection of the wreckage.

A crane will be moved into the area sometime tomorrow or Wednesday. Damaged containers will be transported south for repair.

Badger says they've had wind incidents in the past, but nothing of this magnitude. Its only amounted to a couple of containers in past incidents.

He says there will be no delays in their shipping activities as a result the incident.

Cold weather persisting in Capital City.
The high wind warning issued for Juneau expired at Noon Sunday.

Meteorologist Kimberly Vaughn says the top gust Sunday morning was 76 miles per hour at South Douglas Island.

It hit 68 miles per hour at the upper terminal of Mt. Roberts, 47 atop the Federal Building, and 49 miles per hour at Mayflower Island.

Winds at the airport were generally around 30 miles hour.

The windy weather sent the wind chill temperatures to between 20 and 25 below.

Windy weather is forecast to keep the wind chill to 20 below zero today, tonight and Tuesday.

This is not good.

NEW - Juneau loses Snettisham power for extended period, avalanche to blame

Juneau has been choked off from its chief supply of electricity by an avalanche.

Gayle Wood of Alaska Electric Light and Power says it happened at about four this morning.

She says it was hardly noticed, except by Thane Road residents, because of diesel generation they had running at the time and low load demands at that hour.

She says it was a massive avalanche about three miles from the Snettisham power house that took out about a mile and a hour of transmission line. That includes damage to four to five towers, she says.

Wood says the community will be virtually reliant on diesel generated power for two to three months with the exception of power that can be generated through the Gold Creek, Salmon Creek and Annex Creek facilities.

The electric utility official says customers can expect to see some very high bills. She figures a 200 hundred percent jump. Wood says she wouldn't be surprised to see an increase to 30 to 35 cents per kilowatt hour prices. It's at eleven cents now.

Since the area is very unstable, Wood says they don't expect to start repairs for two to three weeks since they need to wait for avalanche danger to subside. She describes the terrain in the area as very steep. At this point, they're trying to assess the damage from the air.

Wood calls it the worst disaster they've ever had on the Snettisham line. She used the word "catastrophic" and called it "a hard hit."

Wood stressed the importance of conservation during this time. Right now, she says they're trying to figure out how to secure enough diesel to handle this kind of long term need.

I wonder if there will be another study to take that line off the mountainside and run it sub-sea to Juneau? Wind has blown towers down on that line in the past.

Are you going to see Elton John's concert? He's been a favorite of mine for many years. I can't believe he's playing in little, ol' Anchorage.

:)
