True story: James Stewart was a trained pilot at the start of WW2, enlisted in the USAAF, then instead of accepting a publicity job, fought tooth & nail to be transferred to the 8th Airforce so he could fly B-24's over Europe. When S.A.C. was filmed, he was a reserve colonel in the USAF.
