A Warning for All You True Believers Out There in LitLand

Because we use it and think it's an important subject? Just guessing here...

You guessed wrong.

The danger or your opinion on the lack of it is not an important subject on this thread.

Do you think people should exercise a little bit of thought when they decide to post personal information here? Do you think there might be a slim chance that posting that information could by dangerous?

If you say no, prove it or be a liar. If you say yes, you just made your entire debate moot.

This is very black and white issue. Intellectualizing and rationalizing this is dangerous behavior. The 'Net is dangerous. Period. Just like real life. It doesn't matter if it's more dangerous than real life or not. Trying to equate that is like hitting your hand with a hammer just because getting hit by a car is much worse.

I can't, for the life of me, think of a reason that has any merit whatsoever to tell people not to give thought to what they post on the 'Net like you're doing. There is no viable reason to delude people into believing that posting willy-nilly is perfectly safe. Particularly when you don't practice what you preach. "Sandia" or "Byron." Put up or shut up. But remember, if you do put up your personal information--because not doing so is tacitly admitting that I'm right and you're wrong--someone is eventually going to use that information against you. Not me, but we have trolls who live for trusting souls like you.

To you, perhaps.

I answered this question already. Check out the post you are replying to.

That's enough. This is not a dialog. If at some point you have enough time to actually read what I wrote before responding to it, let me know.

I am just stating I believe the net is a place where people
post personal information and assume they are safe because they are sitting in their home, or at the library, at work etc and that they will continue to be safe.
Yes, it can seem like a conversation between just the few participants, if you forget that you're actually broadcasting.
Living is dangerous. :)
The link didn't cut the mustard, I get that.
It was just one that I read and thought, it had some valid points.
Exactly why I took issue with it in particular, because I basically agree with its admonition. But sensationalism, faulty logic, and bad math hurt more than helped the case.
I agree common sense when on the net is a good idea.
Me too -- thanks for reading my post. :)

You know, the point of this thread is an excellent one, that can't be debated.

Certain aspects of personal info that people post can't be disputed, but it seems as if the type that HS gets can be debated. For example, HS assumes that all of the info he uncovers is accurate. This crap caused me to look at what was on all of my profiles. I laughed my ass off at what I had put down for my name, etc - I had completely forgot.

Hey, that makes me untraceable!

I win, Storm down.

OK, what do I win?

Hey, you're paying attention to me!! Good for me! For an encore I'm going to get into a car accident in the Interstate and delay the morning commute by 5-10 minutes while the traffic rubber-necks it to look at me. I win again! ;)

Time for a bump. Think before you post too much personal info. :)

Thanks Debs. I re-read some of the stuff we posted in those linked threads. Very funny stuff.

Update. Mom is still alive, and still kicking ass.

Phew! Good thing I haven't told anyone that my real name is Boandnreneé Shumpteesha Tyrell Jones, then.

And don't EVEN mention your penchant for unusual av's. We wouldn't want that secret to get out!! :D

***admitting that I look for your posts just because I want to see your newest av -- LOL ***

This is your first decent thread in a long time.

Keep it up and I may actually stop ignoring you...

She's right guys. I've used personal information to troll people. I've even hunted down the owners of this board in order to make a point after "Laurel" decided it was time to censor my ass because I used personal information to go after her good buddy Dixon.

Hell, people send me WAY too much information in PM's because they forget that 'ol A_J has proved he's one of the nastiest trolls here when he wants to be...

I should turn it back off to protect the innocent.

But if I did, I'd never truly know how gay people feel about me!

;) ;)

My fondest memories of Lit are all to do with information about others.

The Intrigued saga was classic.

I quite enjoyed the Angel anihilation too.

Hell, I've caused a couple of posters to absolutley implode!

Remember jodarby anyone?

I wasn't even trolling!

Just asking questions...

I maybe civil to you? But I would never trust you.

Hi Deb!

Heck, I have to learn to read the "date posted." I couldnt' figure out what had given KM the impetus to start such a thread in the last day or so. :D

In any event, I think that the community nature of lit gives people a false sense of security. Hence they post and share personal stuff and may later regret it.

I know I have.

Lesson learned!

:D

Hi MissTaken. :)

<Looking around> Just between me and you? I agree with you.

I won't tell anyone.

Agreeing with me might not win you any points!

;)

I don't need no stinking points. Wait a minute are they Brownie points? Just kidding. :) :D

Your thoughts woke me up a bit as we don't think about those kind of things in our little corner of the world. I understand weird things can happen so we all should be careful. And you're right most people here at lit are pretty good and the few oddballs are easy to deal with

Good morning ladies. And AJ.

I love reading bumped threads. I'm always like "I said WHAT?"
