3rd Annual Great Variations Advent Calendar

My dad was an aerial photographer for the US Navy back in the Korean War. He taught me as a kid how to develop B&W and I was still doing so, using his 50+ yrs enlarger and gear, up until 10 years ago.
I thank you for triggering fond memories.
I did the same all through high school and for a few years after when one of my teachers let sneak me into the lab every once in a while. Never tried any color processing.

The water is only a foot deep with a super slow flow so it acts as a mirror. With a proper camera, tripod, and no one in the damn tour group pushing ya.. you can take an epic photo. This was the only angle my short self could get without any one else in the way.
I've tried to get some shots like that at some of the local caves, but the tours really don't allow the time needed to set up, and when you do get some extra time, somebody from the group is always in the way.

Not a very exciting shot but it shows one of my absolute favorite things in the world. It’s what rain looks like from underwater.

You're killing me. I always wanted to get scuba certified, but a severe inner ear infection as a kid did some damage to my left ear and I was never able to take the pressure much more than 10 feet deep. I love your pics, but sometimes a pic like this makes me hate your pics if you know what I mean.

Yes, I'm jealous. ;)

It's been a few years since I've been there, but we used to have an annual camping trip to Assateague Island where the wild ponies are. It's a special place for me.

Same here for Mrs. Stromer and me. Her father worked for the National Park service in DC and she grew up spending a week every summer camping there. Her grandfather had a place on Wallops Island, so her kids grew up spending a week a year visiting the VA side of the island as well.
I discovered Assateague as a senior in High School. Instead of spending my spring break in Florida, drinking and doing what horney teens do, I went to a marine biology school on Wallaps Island, discovered Assateague, and have been going there since then, both with my ex and Mrs. Stromer.

Just a fun shot taken from our last visit to Assateague.
