Anyway!

I had derby last night. We did another 5 on 5 scrimmage and it was awesome. Jams are absolute chaos. Between knowing the rules so I don't get called a penalty every two minutes, and trying to see every skater around me, I kinda felt like I disassociated a little last night. 🤣🙈 We learned all the rules and how to skate safely but once you're out there it's pretty much do whatever you can to knock the other jammer out.

I'm learning that I really like jamming over blocking, but both are exhilarating.

Just trying to imagine all the things you need to pay attention to.. on top of simply being so physically steady and strong!!

Compared to many of the veteran skaters I am not that cool 🤣 but it is a lot of fun and they are all super supportive and want us to be there. I took a hard hit last night and one of the coaches high fived me and said, imagine taking that hit when you first started. I've definitely come a long way!

Gosh, where to begin.. 😳 first, I have been spending an unreasonable amount of time on Lit lately - It has been my escape from reality, something I truly needed these days.

Spoiler warning: suicide attempt. Remember to always contact someone if you have thoughts of self harm or suicide.
My brother had a serious suicide attempt. But alive now, no physical issues. Just the fact that he does not want to live.

So, my training became one of the few moments, where I was able to focus solely on what my body needs.

But sanity wise? I think, no - yeah, I am going to deal with this! There are no other options, never stop, always look ahead.

This week is winter holiday for the schools in Denmark.
And the whole family have joined me here in the forest.
Every morning, I will get up and do my barre training, before the family starts to rustle in their beds.
Then some long hikes with the not-so-small-humans; we are going to search for amber and fossils at the beach.
And not forgetting the good stuff: cook a lot of different stews!

It is going to be good.

Happy Sanity-Check Sunday

It’s raining hard here today and super windy. It’s been cold and we are expecting snow this week again. It’s been unusually snowy this year. Now, as a person who gets snow days from work, I’m not complaining, buuut as a beach bum, I’m saying enough already.

As far as self care, I’m doing a good job with daily walks. (I don’t have a choice ;-)) but hey! It counts! Getting outside helps. It does lift my mood for a little while and it’s good to get my body moving.

Another win? I found a really good therapist- and if you have ever tried to find one who is covered by insurance AND that you click with, it is like finding a needle in a haystack. There can be a stigma attached to reaching out to a mental health professional so I just want to put that here in black and white (well, purple and white) that it’s easy to do and more common than one may think. The way I found mine is I went on my insurance carrier’s website and looked up therapists who take my insurance and called and scheduled appointments. It takes weeding through people you like. But it’s been worth it for me.

I just found that I was doing an awful lot of over-thinking and going in circles in my mind. And so I figured it couldn’t hurt to talk with someone with some training. So far, I’m happy with my decision.

Do you find yourself overthinking? I guess most of us do this. Where do you do most of your overthinking? How do you stop? Is it usually about the same thing?

Here to echo the point that it is perfectly fine to find someone to talk to who is a professional and not involved in other parts of your life.

It's snowy and cold here, and we are under winter weather advisories through tomorrow. But I got some time on the bike and some strength training in. Nothing too strenuous, but got the blood going.

Firstly, thank you for sharing. It can be a very hard thing to do, admitting you need help, but I think it's very important to talk about these things to reduce the stigma. It's better than it used to be, but I find it's still there.

I overthink enough, but I'm better than I used to be to. I'm not sure where I do most of it, but stopping it usually starts with acknowledging it's happening. It's easy to get into a loop, and it's ok to acknowledge you're in it. From there it's looking for the things that help me get out of my own head. Going for a run, playing the guitar, listening to a podcast, even doodling on a notepad because sometimes that's all you have time for (and I can't draw worth shit).

Right now it's shoveling snow because it just won't stop. That's driving me away from sanity these days... but I'm getting through it. I think. 😂

I don't get into the overthinking spiral when I'm active and busy and have other distractions. And most of my waking moments are active, busy, and full of other distractions.

So my overthinking saves itself for 3am, when it can have my undivided attention. Thank you, brain.

The only solution I have is patiently chipping away at that nocturnal fatberg of fear until the sewer of my brain can flow freely again. In other words, I write a list of things I can do in the morning which will address whatever is on my mind.

The thing about overthinking? Sure, your brain can come up with an infinite number of potential problems and overwhelm you. But if can also come up with an infinite number of ways to address them.

Brains are good. Zombies know this.

Yes brains are good. Except for when they’re not. Sometimes I feel like mine is out to get me. It just is hard to harness and that obsessive spinning thing happens and that’s no fun. I like the suggestion of writing down a list of things to address at a later time. That reminds me of a suggestion my mom gave me. She said to write down whatever is bothering me on a piece of paper, fold it up, and put it in a Higher Power box. (Or to burn it. That might be reserved for different problems, but I digress.) The point was to name the problem, and then let it go in a way.

I also believe that our subconscious works on solutions when we aren’t actively seeking answers. It takes me a long long time to settle on how I really feel about things or the best solutions for myself. I’m envious of people who know what they want immediately and can voice it coherently right away. I’ve never been like that. It always takes me forever. But, once I’ve got it, I’m pretty happy with my choice.

I've been seeing a therapist for about four months. Great decision. Finding the right therapist is key. So far it's proving extremely helpful.

Before sleep. It's a minefield. One stray thought can prompt hours overthinking worst case scenarios. 🙄
 
Temp dropped into the 20s overnight and the wind chill is in the single digits, so working out in my uninsulated garage was nippy to say the least. But it’s done. Still debating whether to brave the cold plunge later today.

Even though the scale hasn’t moved down much in the last 6 or 7 weeks, I had to tighten my belt a notch yesterday. I guess that’s a sign my body is changing, despite the number and the scale. 🙌🏻
