🧘🏼‍♂️🤾🏻‍♀️Getting Sweaty Again: The 3rd Circuit 🚴🏼‍♂️🏋🏼‍♀️

Most Americans needs primary care doc referrals for PT for insurance to cover it (if they even cover it). I have excellent insurance and it is still stupid expensive for a half hour of lifting a leg or balancing, basically.
How much is stupid expensive?

Even 25$ a session, 3x a week, for 6 months, with insurance is rough.

Without insurance it’s 100$ a session.
Mine was $75 per session and usually took 2 hours with a DPT. Obviously I wasn’t working with the DPT the whole time since they had assistants to help with ice and stem

Hey everyone. I know that I don't post much here, mainly because I am usually not doing anything new with my routine. But today I am looking for any advice or insight any of you might have. For the past five months, I have had issues with pain in the middle of my right quad. It seems to wax and wane, but never completely resolves, and only occurs with a couple activities, but seems to have gotten worse recently. I don't recall any precipitating injury or event.

It hurts when I walk down stairs, but not when I step down with my right foot. The sharp pain occurs more when I am stepping down onto the opposite foot. It’s like the quad can’t take being flexed that much while being weight bearing. Even if the pain isn't bad when I start going down the stairs, by the last flight I am only going down one step at a time starting with the right foot. It’s weird. There is some pain when stepping up onto a step with the right foot. We live in a third floor walkup, of course.

The other time it hurts is when I stand up after sitting or lying down for a while and try to step onto my right foot. When I put full weight onto that foot there's a significant sharp pain that radiates towards both the knee and hip. After a few steps, the sharp pain recedes.

I have tried stretching it, soaking in Epsom salt baths, using BioFreeze gel, and taking ibuprofen. They all seem to help, although just for a time and never completely. I know that I should probably go and see my primary care doctor, but I am pretty sure that the doctor will tell me that it’s probably a pulled muscle and I need to rest it. So that’s what I am finally doing. I haven’t done the elliptical in over a week, as it got to the point where it would start to hurt after about 20 minutes.

I guess this post is a combination of venting my frustration and of seeing if anyone has experienced this themselves. I feel like I had finally gotten into a good groove with exercise. Now I worry that I might fall off the wagon. Any insight or advice will be very appreciated.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m so glad you’re here. 💜

What’s your favorite outdoor workout/activity?
I’m a hiker.
You?
Dreaming of summer heat so yes, all outdoor sports amazing. Top favs for me are trail hiking or running, golfing (while jogging if I get first tee time), paddleboarding and deck/beachside/paddleboard yoga. All workouts are better done outdoors IMO!!

Once I knew from dr/chiro/mobility coach where my shoulder and back pain was stemming from, I benefitted from PT/strengthing with Hinge Health app... A friend had recommended, and they sent tablet and bands and did daily PT exercises from that and didn't go in for PT.

I've always had problems with standing for long periods of time to do things like washing dishes but I didn't really think anything of it as I thought it was normal to want to sit down after 30 minutes of washing up! A few years ago I started to get incredible pain in my knees and I went to the Dr who referred me to the PT. She did the whole PT thing of manipulating my legs to see what hurt and what didn't and it turns out my lower back isn't very strong so the "load bearing" task was transferring to my knees.

She recommended a few exercises but they just hurt me more so I stopped doing them. During our conversation she mentioned that my swimming would help strengthen my lower back anyway so I just ensure that I go to the pool regularly and I haven't had any further problems. I do notice if I haven't been in the pool in a while though.

I know it's a very different beast in the US but I do recommend trying to get a PT to take a look if possible.

So, since having Covid in early January I've been napping more than I ever have in my life - sometimes needing two naps just to get through the day. Today was the first day that I haven't felt the need to nap at all. Maybe it's because I didn't really do much today to exhaust myself (allergies have kept me inside most of this week). But I'll happily take what I can get.

I also committed to coaching my son's rugby team again this summer. This will be my sixth year. I still have no idea what I'm doing. But it's a workout!

I understand. I was just putting my 2 cents in. I will say it sounds like other’s PT experiences aren’t like mine and I’ve had ones that weren’t good too, but if you find the right one it’s great!
Even if I found the ‘right’ one, it would still be $120 a week. There’s way more I can do with that money than sit with a heat pack on my knee.

I’m a hiker.
You?

I love walking and running outside. I haven’t run much lately though. My favorite is a nice shady forest path. Bonus points if my dog gets to be with me.

If I have to ... And yes I have that app and have looked at some of the trails out to the East. I do love to hike Sunken Meadows around the bluffs overlooking the sound. Very pretty.

Which app is that?

This is one of my favorite work out music

Love it! So motivating. My workout music choices vary so much. Some are hyper. Some are brooding. Some are sexy. Just depends on my mood. Thanks for sharing this. :)

And I know you aren't asking for advice, but should you chose to read this:
have you tried massage therapy? Often times, a really good massage therapist has told me that my pain is coming from a different area of my body than I think it is. If you're open to that, massage therapy has frequently made all the difference in my physical well being.

Yesss. It’s amazing how massages can point out areas on my body that I didn’t even think I had an issue with.

Yeah so so expensive.

Glad you found a good PT and that you’re on the mend!

Summer is so close. Counting down the days…

If there's an outdoor pool and it's clean I'll be in it.

I like walking and I used to hike quite a bit, but it's been a while since I've been fit enough for a full hike.

I love to swim. You’re inspiring me to try and swim more. I need to find a good pool.

Coaching rugby! That sounds like a good workout! And fun too. Did you play for school?

I like doing yoga outside. I also enjoy running, cycling, and disc golfing.

Yessss being outside is refreshing. It really boosts my morale too. :)

Nope! Never played in my life! Someone in our town started a youth flag rugby team about a decade ago, and it's really taken off. It quickly got to the point where they had way more kids than they had coaches for, so they asked if I'd help out. I figured that if someone's asking me for help with sports they must be really desperate, so I agreed. It's been fun.

I have other favorites too, but the toughest workout involving music was:

When I used put on my boxing gloves, put on sad music, that made me emotional ( sometimes cry ) and beat the shout out that bag for an hour. I would hit it hard, non stop. My toughest workout, where music played a major role

Yes music can definitely bring out emotions. It’s an emotional workout too. I bet you felt a lot better after that.

I'm not in a routine as such right now, but with the purchase of a new bike - and the weather finally cooperating, I got a nine mile ride in today despite the strong winds. And my goal is to either get a walk or a bike ride in 3-5 times a week, weather permitting of course. And even then hopefully doing something active.

Crazy hard work out today. My workout Buddy has been gone for 3 weeks. This week, she has COVID. So I’m taking the brunt of my trainer every weekend!

I’ve generally felt like crap all day, so hopefully that’ll be over if I can get a good night’s sleep (hahaha aahahahahahaha hoooooo that’s funny). Gardening tomorrow. Have to get the beds ready for veggies in two weeks!!

I wish I wanted to learn how and try gardening as love to get my hands dirty, but just do not... can't wait for farmer's Market season! Good luck on gardening today!

Hoping to get some golf in this afternoon!

So, the past few months, I've been getting up early to work out before work. Not only did I slim down, but I have considerable amount of energy and am down to 5 cups of coffee a day! :nana:

I'll have to restart on resistance training, but I wanted to get my cardio up before I do.

Part of my motivation, aside from making this my 'year of health', is this thread. Thank you :)
