Fairport Convention - Meet On The Ledge
Not the actual band, maybe, but the genre... that revisionist folk of the 60's. I go into a lot of stuff derived from it whilst not really knowing how Richard Thompson, et al, shaped music. This song i heard being covered by Counting Crows and only heard the original a couple of years ago as i slowly worked back, having read RT's book and wanting to hear more. This could easily be released today and its influence is stamped over a lot of stuff that i loved that came after.

His autobiog is a very good read... made me go deeper into his back catalogue too. I still feel like an outsider to his stuff, even though i saw him live in the late 80's and have a lot of his stuff.

Apparently, if you leave Youtube music going long enough, all roads lead to Macklemore. I didn't think much of him at first - I thought he was mostly novelty songs and fluff. But there's some real depth in his work, and even his lighter songs have quality musicianship behind them. Plus, I'll never say no to any collaboration with Foxy Shazam's Eric Nally.

Early to mid-80s were a great and weird time for music. No streaming, and radio was important to every high schooler, as was MTV, which played music 24-hours a day. News, for a few minutes an hour, and weird contests (for John Cougar Melencamp's Little Pink Houses tour, you could win a house, and you and your friends would "paint that mother pink." Yes, they had many contests like that), but other than that, music video after music video. And record stores, where you could find music that was neither on the radio nor MTV. A lot of my music was out of record stores.

At this point, I was deep into heavy metal. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Armored Saint, Warrior, Cirith Ungol, Yngwie Malmsteen, Merciful Fate, Dio, and these new guys, Metallica. More obscure European and unground stuff, a lot of punk, and still the more interesting New Wave. Who didn't I love? This tiny guy with an obsession for purple clothing and frilly pirate shirts. Prince was big in my high school, and maybe because he was so popular with the popular crowd, I wasn't giving him any slack. No interest. Movie with him? Nah, rather go see Buckaroo Banzai again, or Gremlins. But things change.

UnquietDreams's Theory on History: every epic or monumental action throughout history starts the same way: "so, there was this girl..."

So, there was this girl. Kristen. Cheerleader, but smart, sweet, not stuck up. Way, way, way out of my league, by a lot. But for some reason I cannot comprehend, she liked me. And she wanted to go see Prince on the Purple Rain Tour. So I sat up all night waiting in line for tickets (no online, so no scalpers grabbing them electronically). All night outside a GI Joes, until they went on sale the next morning. Drove to Tacoma. And here comes Prince. And...Holy. Fuck. I went in annoyed, I came out a disciple. Just an utterly amazing, electric, powerful show. And I was a fan.

"Let's Go Crazy (Live, 1985)," Prince and the Revolution. Recorded on that tour. God, he was young, but we all were.

OMG! Prince was my choice today too. I thought I was the only weirdo who didn't like him for the longest time. My God! Talk about a musical genius!! I don't know when or how I finally started to appreciate him, but it was definitely late. Possibly after he was dead. Now that I think of it, it might have been his performance at the George Harrison tribute with Tom Petty where he wailed on his guitar for My Guitar Gently Weeps. I could post that performance since @UnquietDreams took the song I planned to post, but I'm going with When Dove's Cry. This song epitomizes Prince's genius. Does anyone notice that there is no bass in this song? How the hell can you make a killer song without a bass line? Who does that? Prince! That's who!

This is a song I never thought much about, but then heard it a few years ago and realized that it was quite deep and poetic... I guess I had to first become an adult to realize the truth and beauty behind the lyrics.

I don’t remember the first time I heard them but now I love so many of their songs. The lead singer, Justin, has gone through so much and you can feel it in his lyrics and voice. I chose this song because it’s live and you can hear the audience getting into it.

I just listened to Dirt Room the other day, and I was going to use it for something, but it didn't quite work. Very talented band and guy.

Wow, two of you have posted Prince, I’m so happy. I’ll post about an artist who I was just talking about with someone yesterday. In HS and when I was younger, I’d never have admitted liking anything country. Especially this giant wigged overly bubbly person. But now, I was just saying to this someone yesterday, can you imagine hearing someone say the words. “I hate Dolly Parton?” I think if someone said that to me, our conversation would be over. Then the choice of what to post comes in, she wrote two of our greatest songs in one weekend. Well I’m gonna go this route because so many people think it’s Whitney Houston’s song, but I like how Dolly sings it better, it’s way more sad how Dolly does it.

Did you know she wrote it for Porter Wagoner as a going away present. He did not want her to leave the show but she needed to for career growth. ❤️

Ok, I don't think many of you know this, but I am a Swiftie. I was not at first. I didn't care for her earlier work. But then this little ditty came out and my body started moving and I couldn't stop and the song stayed in my head for about three months. I was a fan from that day on.

Even at my "I hate country" worst (which I grew out of as well), I always love Dolly. Dolly, Johnny Cash (one of my grandmother's favorite memories was me at four, jumping onto the coffee table and declaring "Hello. I'm Johnny Cash!"), and for some obscure reason, Tom T. Hall. And she has just gotten better with age. I love that they nominated her for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (which is a tourist attraction, but that is another post) and she tried to get them to not vote since she wasn't a rock singer. The voters ignored her, so she recorded a rock album, with some amazing friends, so she could feel good about being there. Her philanthropism, her friendships -- just an exemplary person all the way around.

Oh, and she can sing...

I heard a lot of hype about this song in particular and I have a bad habit of being contrary so I didn't listen until a couple weeks ago. I'm not sure that I anticipate Sabrina becoming my favorite pop girly but this one is a catchy tune with super cute aesthetics.
