❌Monthly Song Challenge: Archived🎵

Day 10: So, for their fiftieth anniversary, pick a song you like that was played on Saturday Night Live.

I am using my second song pass. This is the mashup that starts "Ladies and Gentlemen..." 50 Years of SNL Music. If you get a chance to see the whole thing, it is fantastic, but this is just...amazing. It was mashed up by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson of The Roots, by watching every recorded act in SNL history, then putting this together, which took about 6 months. I am linking his Instagram account as NBC takes down every version on YouTube. He got every artist's okay for the music rights (and if you have never dealt with music rights, you have no idea how huge that is) except for the estate of Luciano Pavarotti, who didn't understand what he was talking about. (Pavarotti was supposed to mash with Bobby McFerrin, and part of me weeps that that didn't happen.) Sit back and take it in.

"50 Years of SNL Mashup," Questlove.

Not missing the point as giving a resource to anyone who wants to use it

No blood, no foul. Not every prompt will touch everyone. When it is outside my wheelhouse, I dig in, which is why I love this thread so much -- it pushes me. But not everyone swims that same stream.

It was my first prompt attempt, so I apologize it missed. I will keep your feedback in mind.
You do you during this prompt week. Song gave you this as a prize and you worked hard for it. You shouldn’t have to overthink how others will interpret whatever comes to your mind.

I don’t remember having this kind of response when we had country prompts not too long ago. I feel like most of us used google (and google failed some of us 😏) on that challenge. Did we bicker and show our smartasses…sure! But we still had fun!

Day 10: So, for their fiftieth anniversary, pick a song you like that was played on Saturday Night Live.

He has recently claimed this switch did not get him banned as long rumored. But whatever. Still cool af live performance.

For the record I did not watch this live as I was a toddler. But via the miracle of the internet I was still able to know it happened and find this clip.

I almost picked the Costello/beastie boys version of this

Day 11: A song that is a cover, but you like the original more (you can post one cover as reference).

Valerie - The Zutons

I love love love, the Amy Winehouse version, it's so soulful. However, I always, in my ignorance, thought others were covering her song. Til I dug a little deeper and stumbled upon the actual original song 😱 so many people, I feel don't realize this song is by a rock band, The Zutons (great name). Amy loved the song so much, she covered it.

This original version is more upbeat and playful, while Amy's feels deeper and more emotional. Both have their merits. But, I wanted to give credit where credit is due, and that's to The Zutons ❤️

Kill Bill is one of my favorite Tarantino films and includes the Nancy Sinatra original Bang Bang My Baby Shot Me Down (1966) which was turned into an amazing dance pop cover by Dua Lipa...

Day 11: A song that is a cover, but you like the original more

The original is iconic and a real bop, but this channel takes songs and records lyrics that speak about what's literally happening in the music video.

Not as good of a song, but it's f'ing hilarious 😂

Men Without Hats - Safety Dance, the Literal Version

Day 11: A song that is a cover, but you like the original more

I think everyone knows Janis Joplin’s version of this song, which is fucking great.

But Aretha Franklin’s little sister, Irma did a bang up job on this Burt Burns classic.

Janice had soul but Irma had a little bit more IMO.

Day 10 - SNL

It was hard to choose because SNL has had a lot of musical acts over 50 years and many have played songs I like. So I tried thinking of performances that I think rank as the best they've had, still tough and it came down to one sometime has posted, another that I hope someone posts, and this one.

I can't think of more than maybe a very small handful that I think are better SNL performances, really.

That was me, what performance ranked but ultimately had to go with Stones. SNL began with my college career so saw and met many from the show in different ways and places. Too bad, I don't collect autographs. Good choice you made.

Love this version...
Dauius Rucker....."Wagon Wheel"

Old Crowe Medicine Show

The melody for the song and the lyrics to the chorus come from a demo titled "Rock Me, Mama" that was originally written and recorded by Bob Dylan.

Cradle of Filth: Fear of the Dark (Iron Maiden). I apologize in advance to any Maiden fans out there.

Haaahaha I haven't heard this in like 20 years! It's so much worse than edgy teen me thought it was 😍
