I watched that eruption from the top of Mt Tabor in Portland. Although, I think I was up there a day or two later after the ash died down but it was still spewing stuff out.

That was a life changing event to witness.
Standing on a dormant volcano in the middle of a city, watching a formerly dormant volcano explode -- I like the synchronicity.

I was at home, it was Sunday. We lived on a hill, and I could see it very well from where we were. The ash didn't hit us on the first eruption, as the wind took it north and east, but I remember it on the second one. I have an old Skippy jar 3/4 full of ash around someplace. Profound impact, yes,

Have you been there since? Beautiful. And Coldwater 2 is now the Johnson observatory. IYKYK. If you don't read the book. It is really good.
