2024 First Presidential Debate Thread: June 27th

Trump aced his cognitive tests!
Hey, he remembered the doctor's name this time. Must have practiced that a lot.

I'd say mark one for Biden at this point for saying, in the context of Trump's last medical exam, "Does he look six foot four and 230 pounds to any of you?" if he hadn't flubbed that line a bit.

Not an inspiring debate.

As a Democrat, I want to consider a different nominee for the Democrats. I hope Biden will be honest about his performance and cognitive abilities. We cannot risk turning the nation and the future of Democracy to a corrupt narcissist.

That’s all folks! Thanks to both candidates, thanks to CNN, and thanks to Rory for starting this thread.

I'm worried about the impression of this. However there is the reality of trying to actually deal with someone who is throwing everything out. Trump has no coherent answer and is throwing out literally 5 issues in a single answer for every single question.

Biden is going to have to find a summary line to try to deal with Trump's insanity.

He is incapable of doing so, which is the point you’re avoiding. Joe Biden from 15-20 years ago would have knocked Trump around the car park for every lie, exaggeration, misrepresentation and failure of understanding. Today, and going forward, he can’t.

His family should pull him from the race, if his party doesn’t - and I suspect it might happen.

I'll still stick with the old guy over the psychopath liar.

Yes Joe is old. No doubt. He mumbled. Absolutely. But if you actually listened most of what he said was spot on.

Trump spoke clearly. He projected. He enunciated. He made almost zero sense. He sounded freaking insane at times. He lied incessantly.

By appearance Trump "looked" great. Until he opened his mouth.

Dems currently in downright turmoil over wtf to do……..as if you couldn’t see this car crash coming.

That was like watching a Christian get thrown to a lion.

I want to see that golf match they were talking about. Should be interesting. Whoever wins that will probably pick up some votes, but of course if Trump were to lose, he'll just blame Biden for cheating, or something. Either way, they should air that on ESPN. Presidential Golf.

But you’re failing to see the optics. Your average citizen who is into the headline and the imagery only sees the strength v the weakness. It’s fucking kryptonite.

This was a boxing match asked for by the Dems - their man has got pasted by an opponent who spent the evening with his chin out and never got hit.

Biden did better that I expected, only so far as he didn't outright die on stage. His bewildered and confused stares, mumbling and making no sense was about the best case scenario you could expect.

Trump did alright, made some good comments and retorts. He could've stuck to some core issues a bit more and not branched out so much, but overall not bad.

Trump's not the best debator, but I would heartily like to thank CNN for hosting the debate that made Trump look amazing in comparison to his opponent.

Yes, and Diego Maradona was the best soccer player to ever step on a pitch - but they stopped picking even him when they saw he was past it.

He isn’t fit to do the job if he won it, and he isn’t going to win it at this rate because mental competence is a deal breaker for more than sufficient voters to swing this election.

If you aren’t prepared to see what’s in front of you and want to cling to some image of what Biden has done instead of what he remains capable of doing then it’s all a bit emperors new clothes for me.

This wasn't a mental competence display issue - although if it is honestly Trump lost. He sounded, frankly, unhinged. Yes he said his insanity very clearly and forcefully but what he said was for the most part insanity.

Biden actually has accomplished quite a bit. Quite a bit more than Trump did.

Age is becoming too much of an issue for Biden. Democracy is more at risk than it was before this debate. A pathological liar is running circles around Biden.

Sorry to have to say this.
That is exactly right.
Really, the most essential job that Biden had in this debate was to not look and sound old and confused.
He looked and sounded old and confused.
Trump did not make any more sense than Biden, but he looked alive and vigorous spouting his nonsense.

It remains a case where for multiple reasons Trump cannot be voted for by a reasonable person.
