Supreme Court allows White House to press social media companies to remove disinformation

CNN

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said the White House and federal agencies such as the FBI may continue to urge social media platforms to take down content the government views as misinformation, handing the Biden administration a technical if important election-year victory.

Barrett-
“To establish standing, the plaintiffs must demonstrate a substantial risk that, in the near future, they will suffer an injury that is traceable to a government defendant and redressable by the injunction they seek,” Barrett wrote. “Because no plaintiff has carried that burden, none has standing to seek a preliminary injunction.”

No injunction was sought as such. They just wanted totally unrestricted free speech without consequences. They wanted the whole concept of sites deleting information tossed.

Media calling this a "stunning mistake" re: early posting.

They did this recently, no?

jordan mocked for his conspiracy theories after SCOTUS ruling

"The plaintiffs, without any concrete link between their injuries and the defendants' conduct, ask us to conduct a review of the yearslong communications between dozens of federal officials, across different agencies, with different social-media platforms, about different topics," Barrett wrote for the majority. "This court's standing doctrine prevents us from exercising such general legal oversight of the other branches of government."
"As expected, the Supreme Court has issued a stinging rebuke to Jim Jordan and his multimillion-dollar conspiracy theory fueled witch hunt," Nadler said in a statement. "The Court concluded that the social media platforms' exercised their own judgement' with regards to content moderation-which is precisely what we have heard from the dozens of witnesses that Jim Jordan has dragged before this committee."

Supreme Court blocks Purdue Pharma opioid settlement

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Thursday blew up the massive bankruptcy reorganization of opioid maker Purdue Pharma, finding that the settlement inappropriately included legal protections for the Sackler family, meaning that billions of dollars secured for victims is now threatened.

The court on a 5-4 vote ruled that the bankruptcy court did not have the authority to release the Sackler family members from legal claims made by opioid victims.

Supreme Court halts EPA’s 'Good Neighbor Plan'

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday temporarily blocked the Environmental Protection Agency’s “Good Neighbor Plan.” By a 5 to 4 vote, the court ruled that the emissions-reductions standards set by the plan were likely to cause “irreparable harm” to almost half the states unless the court halted the rule pending further review by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

The EPA’s Good Neighbor Plan aimed to ensure compliance with the 2015 Ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standards law. To carry out the law’s mandate, the EPA required “upwind” states to reduce air pollution affecting “downwind” states. Under the Good Neighbor rule, states are first given the chance to create a plan that complies with agency’s ozone guidelines. If a state fails to submit an adequate plan, the EPA then designs a compliance plan for the state. In February 2023, the EPA determined that 23 states had not provided sufficient plans and the agency then decided to implement its own emissions-control program for those states.

SCOTUS sides with designer who didn't want to do gay wedding sites.

Predictable.
This always was a headscratcher for me. I've never understood why creative product companies should be forced to create something they didn't want to as long as they hadn't already contracted to do it.

Boy all these major decisions, no wonder they're not bothering to put out the piddly ass no big deal presidential immunity ruling.

This court is a sham.
If they put that ruling out today and it gave Trump even a hint of an immunity for anything, the Court will have been guilty of putting its thumb on the election scales, a la Comey in 2016, in favor of Trump on debate day. Of course they've already done that by not ruling against him earlier.

The law is the law. Realistically the court is putting their thumb on the scale for Trump by not ruling.

Likely they are just going to send it back down to determine what acts they are specifically talking about anyway.

I stand on my opinion: this court is a sham.

This decision should have been released far before the debate was ever scheduled but it should definitely be released before the debate. 6 of 9 are in the tank for Trump.

Well, yes to all of that. Doesn't really speak to the suggestion that decision will come from the Court today.

At this point I am pretty sure they will not release it today. Which means potentially tomorrow (doubt it), and then July. I've heard they can even technically put off the decision release until September.

This court is a sham.

They did not release the immunity decision today.

It’s only a sham because the left doesn’t have control over it, nothing new!

5-4 vote says bankruptcy court judge has no authority to exempt billionaires from future liability.
That "right" is reserved exclusively for the Supreme Court!
Only if billionaires have invested wisely in SCrOTUS greasing or lubing

I could see today, tomorrow, July 3rd before the holiday.

That's including formally, or another "leak".

Laws need to be changed so that rulings must be issued no later than 60 days after hearings. This practice of last minute stuff needs to end.

Absolutely. This shit is ridiculous.
