Sex & Shenanigans

My ex...did not camp. Literally the worst weekend I ever spent was "camping" with her and our daughter when she was young. It beat out going to my maternal grandmother's funeral, where the entirety of my father's family spent the weekend around me talking shit about me in German. Not knowing I spoke German. It beat out my Senior Prom weekend, when my girlfriend dumped me the week before, and I couldn't get my tux deposit back. (I put on the tux, dropped acid, and went to the beach.) Worse than all of those. The worst.

I solo backpack, to get the fuck away from everyone.
Acid on the beach sounds ok.. just saying’ 😁☮️💗

Would you rather attend an orgy that was evenly distributed with men and women or one with more of one gender.. and which gender would you prefer to be in abundance ??
I have attended two orgies, one was about 50/50 and the other 60/40 men to women. My conclusion?

That I'm not an orgy guy. Spent the whole time worried about sucking in my stomach.

Send me to live on the island of Themyscira and I'll live out my life a happy woman.
Have you read Anne Carson's translations of Sappho, If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho? It is absolutely the one book you should take with you on that island. It is gorgeous.

I've read some of Sapphos poems but translated poetry seldom strike a chord with me. Nor does hers. Just knowing that these are not the original words but an interpretation suck all the joy out of it for me. Can't explain why, it just does :(

What book's this from?

Also, the reason I've had enough of camping is that I was in the army for a stint. On my 20th birthday I awoke in a 1P tent in the forest covered in a layer of snow. Had to Get out of the sleeping bag, out of the tent, half naked, get dressed in sub-freezing temp and then get ready for another day in hell. Never been so cold in my life. Never been camping since.

Where, and I cannot stress this enough, the fuck is this from?

Fave book opening, from Erlend Loe's "Doppler":

My father is dead.
And yesterday, I killed an elk.
What can I say? It was either her or me.
"The building was on fire, and it wasn't my fault."

-Blood Rites, Jim Butcher.

You and I have a similar experience … though not army related … I went camping on Easter long weekend as a teen with a group of friends. They were hardcore back country campers… I was not. I was only invited because one of the guys wanted to date this girl and her parents wouldn’t let her come if there was only boys going.

We went up the massive mountain hike and set up shop in 2 tents … then it snowed.
We spent the whole day in the tent cuz most of us were not equipped for snow camping and adventure.

The 2nd night one guy who had slept in a spot of water in the boys tent that night came and slept in my tent for night 2 ..
mid-morning I was woken up to the tent collapsing on us from snow. We had to try and dig ourselves out and when we finally got out we were freezing and soaked.

Then it stared raining.

We hiked down and 2 of us ended up with hypothermia.
That is when snow caves come in handy. We had a wilderness travel class in high school where we did snow caving, canoe camping, and our final was a five-day camp out. Whole lotta fun.

Definitely should add to your list.

It has romance, lots of sex (CW so no nudity but very sexy centric), humor, strong female relationships, music, and dancing. And deals with tough subjects like mental health, race, and gender in a very smart and funny way.

For reals. So heartfelt and honest and cringey and hilarious. Again a nearly perfect show.

I don't read ancient Greek well enough. But that translation, with images of the original fragments, was evocative for me. And some translations are more moving than others. But I always like finding places you and I differ. It is...comforting, heh.

So why are you going camping again?

You guys and your silly novels. Pfft.

The undeniably best start to any literary masterpiece...

"The sun did not shine.
It was too wet to play.
So we sat in the house
All that cold, cold, wet day."
