Yeah, if it looks even close to mil-spec they want to classify it as a "military collectible." Fuck'em. There's a shit pot of 'sporterized' Mausers out there, many not well done, that have no collectible value at all. BUT, the actions are what counts and you can turn them into anything you want. You'll find those in the gun stores and pawn shops, mostly in rural areas. The most desirable actions are pre-'43 Wafenfabric (Mauser), BRNO, and La Coruna. That is not to say the others are trash, merely that those are the best.

Both of my main game-killing guns are dubiously-sporterized surplus rifles: Turkish Mauser and Lee-Enfield. The pigs and whitetail don't seem to care, but I have considered taking one or both to a gunsmith.

One of my host families in rural Southeast Asia would sometimes let me go hunting with them. That's actually where I learned to shoot. My own family, of course, detests anything to do with firearms and game hunting and most of them see me as the blackest of apostates for enjoying both. Which is kind of amazing given that I had a great-grandfather who was once a well-renowned safari hunter and endangered species conservationist.

Wandering through the jungle and blasting muntjac with an antique Chassepot rifle was fun. It's a shame that Uberti or the like doesn't make any reasonably-priced reproductions of that weapon, or instead of the Argie FN-49 I might have moved in the opposite direction, tech-wise.
