While I share that sentiment, petting a new fawn means it’s mom abandoning it and the predators catching its scent. So we need to think about this lil guy/girl 🙄
Not trying to argue, but all of the scientific research says that isn't true. The mother might be timid around the fawn at first, but then it will just clean it. Researchers regularly handle fawns and the mother accepts them back.

I am still not endorsing petting a wild fawn, just passing along the info.

I wasn’t referring to being fresh out of their mommy. Trust me I saw two of them being born in this hidden area outside of our office, even the nurses where timing momma deer’s contraction and how they walk funny when they are born. And how she loves them. However, they are born without a scent.

And there’s literature out there to educate us that when momma deer goes to get something to eat, leaving her fawns alone, do not approach baby deer because female deer might not come back if she smells us. Also if any smaller animal approaches a fawn with momma deer around, the deer would whoop its ass. True story.
