Thank you for sharing that 🥰 I do love some obscure stuff, true, but mainstream is mainstream because they're great at what they do! And Maiden is Maiden! What's not to love?

I've never had the pleasure of meeting them - I did do a short stint as a roadie at a big venue here, got to meet some bands but the biggest of the big didn't come to our spot. Caught them live a few times over the years, and Bruce just keeps getting better. The rest of the band are always on point, as far as I know, but I'm not a good enough instrumentalist to tell if they're at their best or not.

And for the last time, I'm not that young! Or little! :ROFLMAO:

Day 4: A song from your favorite artist

I love music. All kinds of music. Many genres, many variations, from a single voice to a symphony, from punk to Vivaldi and hitting most places in between. So this should be a hard choice, like something out of Sophie's Choice.

It isn't. I am a simple man. My favorite band has been that since I was eight or nine. The first two new albums I owned, all mine, were ELO's Out of the Blue, and Queen's Live Killers. Queen has sung to my soul since I was in single digit years. Saw them live a couple of times, but I never saw them do this one.

This is my favorite song from my favorite band, highlighting my favorite musician in the band. Everyone knows Freddie. Everyone love Freddie. Now. Not so much when the band was around. I remember being bullied in junior high for going to see them, because of "that gay guy who sings for them." I love that the world evolved, but I also know that some of the people who punched me in the back then are singing his praises now. It is a weird world, and I am just glad I don't have to paint it. But it is a joy that people grow and change. But Freddie isn't my favorite.

Nor is Brian, guitar god and astrophysicist (received his Ph.d in 2006), who I love, and wanted to grow my hair like. (Spoiler: it didn't work).

Nor Roger, who got them banned from MTV for being too damn sexy, which led to them refusing to tour the US after (I saw them on the last us tour. Main floor. Center. Nine rows back. Best concert ever).

No, my favorite has always been "the other one," Deacy. John Deacon. Solid. Unsung. Quiet (the only one who never sang. He had microphones set up for videos and concerts, but they were never hooked up.) But holy cats and owl, that man could play. Not flashy, he wasn't one for a complex, indulgent bass solo. No, just the perfect note at the perfect time, and nothing when nothing was needed. An underappreciated, subtle, but sublime talent.

Listen to the bass line kicking in at 13 seconds. How Deacy and Freddie throw back and forth on bass and piano. This song isn't very well known, but it should have been huge. Unfortunately, it came after "Bohemanin Rhapsody," which plays in a similar playground of mixing genres outlandishly. But Brian playing a waltz in his solo is a joy forever. And John's work is simply sublime.

Ladies and gentlemen, "The Millionaire Waltz," Queen.

The original founding members were a creative arts major, physics major (a man after my own heart) and a dentist (my second calling it seems, lol). I adore Queen and like you, they've been solid favorites in the Aussie house of depravity since I could walk.

But there's a second co-favorite in my life.

I was an odd child. Born in the wrong decade. I drank the music of my elders and felt nostalgia for a life I never lived. Hearing stories of y'all going to concerts of bands I love makes me love you and envy you in ways I can't explain 😁 British rock from the 60's and 70's found my heart before any boy could. As a result, I developed a love of music that rivals the company of most guys. The Who kept me company during the long and lonely parts of my life in ways that I'll always appreciate. I even named my kid after one of their songs 🤩

There's a reason Bruce is nicknamed the Air Raid Siren. He can bellow his heart and soul out like no other. While other singers may have a broader range, higher notes, darker growls, Bruce puts them all to shame.

Their En Vivo concert was Bruce at his best. His rendition of The Talisman is legendary, unbeatable, the epitome of live metal. If you're not a fan of Maiden and don't want to sit through an 8 minute epic, then just listen from 5:25 as Bruce hits the chorus.

My older brother was at the Who Live at Leeds gig (my home town) where they recorded their amazing live album. I was too young to be there but saw them live later. Always had amazing energy.

I love the Rock in Rio performances, especially Fear of the Dark. Hearing and seeing that massive crowd is awesome.
