Sometimes you mess up the food, and have a burnt pile of zucchini and cheese. Messing something up while cooking for others used to really get to me (trauma, am I right?). I think this was the first big oops of cooking for my partner. I broke down, worried she’d be pissed. Growing up in a food insecure household teaches you that burning food is burning money and harms your whole family.
But she turned it into art, gave me the reassurance and comfort I needed, and four years later I’m still ruining dishes occasionally, but my only reaction is from being hangery.
