The future is dense, walkable cities.

Yeah? The news about it is recent. Wiki hasn’t been updated yet. The idea is to have a walkable infrastructure and jobs.

The investors have already bought up something like 400 square miles of Solano County, CA. They are in it for the long haul.
Where are the residents expected to work? I’ll buy that Wiki hasn’t been updated yet, but you seem to know what the plan is. I’m not trying to be snarky. I’m honestly interested in the economics of the project.

The site says they will create at least 15,000 new jobs that pay at least 125% of the county average wage before the project’s population can go over 50,000.

The map shows mixed use, industry & technology, and maker & manufacturing zones.

I assume at this point they have no commitments from businesses, but in the strong economy of Northern California they figure if they build space for businesses to occupy, it will fill.

Dense walkable cities is part of the future, for the cities that survive. We can guess where those cities will be, because they have important locations that make them worth some expense. #1 on the US list is probably Chicago, with its trade position between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River. Rivers and lakes will be more important for transportation as roads without the cost of road maintenance. The Ohio River may be the next most important river. The Erie Canal requires maintenance and energy to move water through the locks, so it's not a free road, but it connects the Great Lakes to the Hudson River. Sea level rise will create and expand some water routes. The south end of the MIssissippi could become a sea or bay with a Memphis shore.

Keep an eye on the project. As I said before, I listened to A NYT Daily podcast about it just yesterday.

The group had been secretly buying up the land under a LLC. It’s near Travis Air Force Base. The defense department and the FBI got worried about it because they feared it could be a foreign entity trying to set up a spying operation or something. A bunch of journalists finally broke the news that it was a bunch of venture capitalist, many from Silicon Valley. They have been offering farmers sweetheart deals for their land - offering lots of money and letting the sellers stay and continue to profit from operations for the next twenty years or so.

As soon as the story broke the group opened public relations offices and started public outreach. They need to get local support to begin but right now there is a lot of pushback due to nimby sentiment.

The theory is that if they go for the long haul and can eventually get approval it will be mostly one long case rather than fighting tooth and nail for every small bit of redevelopment in an existing city like San Francisco or San Jose.

A city of 400,000 will need services and industrial infrastructure. If they can design it from the ground up they can take their moon shot.

We’ll see.🤷‍♀️

400 square miles? Yeah that sounds walkable and bicycle friendly.

My calculation is it’s 27 square miles actually.

Any amount of land can be developed in a compact/walkable way if it is divided in multiple neighborhoods connected by transit. Manhattan is an extreme example. Disney World is another, in a way.

It's not feasible to haul the racing team on bikes. Or. The sheeple bus.

Freedom. Another reason to shun a shitty!

I hope they do build these 15 minute cities and more and more people can utilize them and enjoy there care free crime free life walking within 15 minutes of everything they will ever need to survive… myself will stay clear of all cities 15 min ones or not… I will be content on our 120 acres in the north woods with my 4x4 and atvs and tractor along with shooting any one of our guns without anyone around more miles… I will keep my unvaccinated self clear of all the government sheep that have a safe place in there overpopulated cities… please don’t come to the country when the cities get to scary or to dangerous just stay home and enjoy the benefits of having everything within 15 minutes… with that it might be wise to have a plan when things go awfully bad and if your living in a fantasy land thinking things won’t then good luck to you…

If where you live is so safe, why do you own multiple guns?

Because it’s my right and I can for one… and I don’t own them because of crime I own them for hunting purposes for the enjoyment of target shooting and if in any worse case scenario where one is needed to defend ourselves would make the last reason… I don’t carry one on me they all have spots they are stored away with the ammo stored separately… so before the comments come of unsafe gun handling… I’m very aware guns are not toys and need to be respected, learned about each one and treated as always loaded… using the best practices when handling anyone of them is taught from generations down in our area… the last reason is just that some are family hand downs that hold lots of stories behind them and left for future family members to add to those stories…

Guns are tools. One gun was the standard when guns were handmade. Now with manufactured tools, there are plenty of specialized tools, backup tools for the main tools, and more tools that just look pretty. But that will be coming back down as ammo becomes more expensive.

Food is expensive and will continue to get more expensive the same as ammo and everything else that we consume… but the price of one bullet to shoot a deer or wild turkey or a bear is the cheapest way to provide food so I’m ok with ammo prices rising… I expect it will as it has for sometime now…

I wonder why people who live out in the countryside are so defensive? We’re discussing cities and they keep dropping in to rant “I love my 500 acres and I hope all of you elite city types DIE!”

Do you think rampant paranoia is a side effect of isolation? Or have generations of outmigration from farms to cities left only the mentally ill in rural places?

It’s a mystery.

Because the thread title excludes country life. There is plenty more future outside the cites.

If people want to talk about the virtues of rural living they should start their own thread instead posting off-topic rants in my thread about urban density.

You fucking douche bag I’ve never once said I want anyone to die or think city people are elite that’s your dumb ass who puts words in others mouths and the way you just did is uncalled for and would get you punched in the face for it… maybe that’s what you need to set your head straight… I never wish any bad things or ill will on anyone I stated you city people can stay in the city when things get to dangerous since your all picturing a fantasy concrete 15 min land… if it works awesome I’m a happy for you all that want to have that life… it’s not for me and if that’s not ok with you then that’s your problem… you seem to have an issue with non city people not agreeing with your one sided views, again that’s your problem… but to spew bullshit like you did is and will be the reason someday you will say it to someone’s face and not behind your mommas keyboard in your childhood bedroom and they will set you straight… it’s people like you that make someone come out of there shell to prove a point and make you think twice before you go and make serious accusations… to everyone else in this thread I wish good health fortune and happiness… to this Asshat I hope he gets a fat lip or two back eyes… karma is real and shows up when you think your mouth can handle anything until karma proves you wrong… remember that when someone does so!!!

I only browsed a few of the posts on this thread to see how people viewed it as I was curious about how it would work… or work at all it’s a long shot I’m sure some cities could achieve it but many others wouldn’t… little I read country living was mentioned and being compared to your wants of a perfect city… I understand your views and hatred for others that don’t agree with your way of thinking or your way of scolding others for not thinking as you do… but that’s how one sided minds operate they are judgmental and are groupies that have no clear leadership to think for themselves but go along with what’s popular… It’s ok like I said please stay in the concrete jungles and stay safe… yesterday was thank full today is a blessing and tomorrow is never guaranteed for anyone…

Cars are fine as rural transportation but ruin cities. This thread is about prioritizing other modes of transit in cities over private automobiles--converting parking lots into dense housing, widening sidewalks and building more trains, converting general traffic lanes into dedicated bus or bike lanes.

I realize that is the topic and was curious to see what it was about… In doing so like I said the comparisons between both had been mentioned and I’m sure more so then what I came across but I’m not wasting any more of time to even go look at more… it’s a grand idea only if only everyone can be civil and get along… That should be be the most important factor in this idea in my opinion… Then many other factors have to be fall in place to achieve a successful city like so… it’s possible for sure and I believe it will happen in many places probably in the next 10 to 20 years…with removing as many cars as you would like to see happen is not ever going to happen not in any of our lifetimes as the oil industry and all sides of politicians are married to the profits and power of oil consumption… yes even those ones that preach green independence are lying to you for votes… If you think they are whole hearted in doing so then they won you over already…

You're correct that the oil and automobile industries are heavily invested in insuring that Americans remain dependent on cars. Even electric cars are bad for cities but auto makers continue to lobby to have them subsidized. We should take the money we're spending on charging stations and redirect it to building trains and protected bike lanes.

I live in the rural, as I have said multiple times, and most of the people moving here now are abandoning urban areas like the crime riddled, drug infested, areas that they are. They come from California, Illinois, New York, Michigan, Virginia and more to escape that wonderful urban society.

We don't want you to die, in fact we want you to thrive and stay in your wonderful 15 minute walkable cities and stop land grabbing here in the rural.

Why? You fucking hypocrites went into a positive topic about firearms and turned it into a shit show. Funny how you hate when someone deflects your topics but love to do it in ones you despise.

Show us a post from Wat's thread where BSG comments? Or are you just projecting again? It's just your war cry against your betters, one might say.
