I had the same reaction to One Day by David Nicholls and then retraumatized myself watching the Netflix series like it would somehow be a different ending

I have done that a few time. "Oh, maybe this time they will end it the way I want it ended!" Rarely happens.

On the other hand, I also get mad when they do change the ending to something happier or neater as well...
