Day 18 (or, 1 for me! Hello!): A song from the 60s.

Those of you who've seen me before might have an inkling about me having a thing for progressive art, modern art, challenging preconceived notions of what art really is. So, what better song than Napoleon XIV's "They're coming to take me away"?

Samuel's track is probably as avant garde as music could be during the 60's, utilizing multi-layered tracks and manually increasing the speed of the tape, by turning it by hand, to increase his vocal pitch.
Simply incredible. Groundbreaking. Love.

I loved this song when I was a kid. 🤣 Appreciate it much more now. 😉

I'm not american, so I had no idea who that was. Had to google, and I must say, I know what old radio broadcasts I'll be digging into tomorrow! Thank you for the namedrop!
Always glad to help another Dementoid join the world.

There was supposed to be a documentary about him a few years back. Stupid money ruining things. 🤬

Eh! One can knock them
Fake band etc
Hendrix hated them
But?
They hit number one

Billboard has compiled the Monkees' top 10 biggest Hot 100 hits, which includes all six of their top 10 singles and the group's three No. 1s: “Last Train to Clarksville,” “I'm a Believer” and “Daydream Believer.”Feb 29, 2012
"Fake" band? Pffft... they were technically a "boy band" I guess. An extremely talented one IMHO. Do we consider N'Sync and Backstreet Boys fake? Sorry... trying not to sound too American... One Direction? BTS?

Nope!

They wrote songs and played instruments. What's "fake" about that? They had a hilariously adorable television show! Innovative if you ask me. ❤❤❤❤

And I'm just clarifying for the haters. I know @Pad_Foot isn't saying that they are fake.

Edited to add: I should have specified that the television show was created for four guys that were cast and who we now know and love. That sounds like magic to me.

Day 18: A song from the 60s +1

My mom was a young teen when this song came out. She said that the Civil Rights Movement had the country divided, and tension was so thick in the US you could cut it with a knife. However, this song brought so much joy to everyone, everywhere. She said even bigoty-est of bigots couldn't help but smile. The way she describes it, it was her generations version of Pharell's "Happy".

Dancing in the Street-Martha Reeves & the Vandellas

I see that we're skipping the 50's, but we still want to celebrate black artists. Here's a link to an interesting article on the Del-Vikings. Their story is interesting and very significant as they were the first racially integrated group that made it to the charts, and during the Jim Crowe era, no less

Micky even has an entire album of Mike song covers.

Hendrix didn’t hate them, but he wasn’t thrilled with their fans. He opened for the Monkees at fhe band’s request but the young fans kept chanting “we want the Monkees!”
Over and over, so he asked to be let out.

A song from the 60s

I’m going to not choose a Beatles song for this, because there are so many 1960s songs I love (my favorite music era). But what song to pick?

I decided on California Dreaming, but I choose the performance from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction for the Mamas and the Papas
Because every other video of the song is clearly lip synched, and that bothers me more than it should.
