Same job as I am doing now, it's just really slow now which is typical and the company didn't grow as much as they thought it would.
When you explain your reasoning, minus the date for hire detail, your boss will, or should, appreciate what you are doing and make sure you are rehired. Very commendabe.
So I got turned down for the volunteer lay off, seems the company has too few Project Managers (what I am) as it is but there are many other positions where there is an excess is how it was explained to me.

I am indeed planning for the future, I know my opportunity for "date for hire" won't last forever but I maxed out my RRSP contributions last year, have a fair bit in a TFSA and down to around 7 years left on my mortgage.
I should have it as a line item on my household budget perhaps.
Once you nail the mortgage you savings can really fly and still have play money. Also recommend investing some money outside of retirement. I don't know how Canadian retirement plans operate, but that's the best advice in the US.
Our government retirement plans are fucked and experts agree not to rely on them for retirement, so I'm not!
That's almost precisely my strategy. My financial advisor slightly under performs the market but significantly reduces my risk. Here we can Save for retirement by putting money in a private retirement account, which reduces our tax burden each year and the money grows tax free, and then is taxed when taken out at retirement (there are variations on that, but that is the most common). In my case, my spouse and I have large retirement plan next eggs and additional money in the market which will also be used for retirement
