“What was the cause of the United States Civil War?”

I recall answering this in at least one previous thread. Today, I wonder how much is this topic used as a diversion from other questions we might ask. Shouting at people about slavery, racism, and partisan history does appear to work for keeping some attention away from more current events and issues.

Don’t much care.

Yes you do; you're a liar. If you didn't care, you wouldn't have put a disclaimer on your support of him ("strictly on policy").

Just remember, Deplorable - and we can't stress this enough - your cowardice will never exonerate you when it comes to your support of a man history will eviscerate. You've poisoned yourself forever, and it comes with real consequences. Have a nice rest of your life. 😘

He'll be dead before the history books come out. While he's alive, he will always be Mr "i don't carry water for Trump". Maybe we can get that engraved on his tombstone?

So Democrats were behind Jan 6th. Have you brought this information to the attention of the FBI?
Well, in a way, we were. I mean, if only we'd sat on our hands and let Trump win re-election, then the deplorables wouldn't have had to try to terrorize the Congress into submission. But we went out there like a bunch of namb-pamby libruls who didn't know our place and voted for Biden. What choice did they have, I ask you?!?!

Obama will perhaps go down in history as the most racially divisive president in history.
Certainly among racists like you he will.

The correct answer is:

A clash between industrial capitalism in the north and chattel slavery in the south. Industrial capitalism wanted to expand into the slave states, and slave owners wished to expand westwards, resulting in a clash of interests.

The Union were actually the "aggressors" in the sense of not allowing the Confederate states to merely secede and go their own way, but the Union were undoubtedly the progressive side in the war and the side which I support 100%. They didn't go far enough either. They should have completed Reconstruction totally, and forced the Radical Republican agenda throughout the former slave states. The failure to do this is the main reason for all of the America's race issues ever since.

Savannah, Georgia, March 21, 1861
By Alexander H. Stephens

The new constitution has put at rest, forever, all the agitating questions relating to our peculiar institution African slavery as it exists amongst us the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution...

Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition.

Many Southern whites are nostalgic for the Confederacy, but they do not want to admit that it was dedicated to the preservation of slavery.

Two of my ancestors fourth in the Union Army. One was crippled for life.

Most Democrats today would admit that the party was wrong in 1860. The Democratic Party only started being on the side of fairness and justice in 1960. The Republicans unfortunately took the other fork in the road.
There were other slight changes before and after 1960 too. The conservative sabotage of most of Ulysses S. Grant's presidency (1869-1877), the 1877 compromise with Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and the Southern Democrats and the following Jim Crow laws, the 1912 bolt of Theodore Roosevelt's Progressives from the Republican Party. The 1920s was full of conservative candidates among the big two parties in presidential elections. 1936 was the first election where Democrats had the majority of the black vote (they supported the New Deal, even if they were excluded from much of it), and the black vote for the Democrats stayed at around two thirds to three fourths up to 1960. Since 1964, the black vote for the Republicans has always been very low, and always somewhere between 6-16% in presidential elections, whereas 1936-1960 it had been somewhere around 25-33%. Goldwater in 1964 being the Republican candidate, opposing the 1964 civil rights act, and pushing a strong conservative and anti-federal government message, did huge damage to the Republican Party's reputation among blacks.

George Wallace in 1968 was a gateway candidate, a Trojan horse, for those Southern Democrats who didn't like Republicans. They would vote Wallace in 1968, couldn't vote Nixon in 1968, but were then comfortable with Nixon come 1972. What Wallace did on the race/civil rights front, Carter did for the evangelicals and the religious front, a Trojan horse for the evangelicals to go into mainstream politics. In the south and some key northern states, the evangelicals went solidly for Carter in 1976, but largely swung over to Reagan in 1980, and they now stayed politically active.

Who was more conservative in 1976 between Carter and Ford? I'd say Carter was more conservative, and the southern states won the election for Carter. Carter played as big a role in the "party switch" as Barry Goldwater and George Wallace had previously. Goldwater proved that the Republican Party could win, and win big, in the Democratic "Solid South", with a conservative message, even as Goldwater lost in a landslide nationwide. Wallace got the pro-segregationist and anti-civil rights crowd who hated Republicans for so long to back him instead of Humphrey in 1968, and those people could then move over to Nixon in 1972 and Reagan in 1980. Carter did the same function for the evangelicals in 1976, who became Reagan supporters in 1980 and strong Republicans afterwards.

Yet now, Democrats are toying with getting Trump removed from ballots. That plays straight into stolen election narratives, and a Trumpist Caesarism in the name of "saving democracy" and "saving our country" around 2024 election time.

The Republicans will claim that the election was stolen no matter what the Democrats do. There’s no downside to enforcing the 14th amendment.

Destroying democracy to save democracy makes democrats the villains. Who do democrats think they are that they believe, in the name of protecting democracy, they have the self righteous self anointed authority to disenfranchise millions upon millions of voters. Democrats call Trump a Caesar figure while they themselves play out authoritarian rule. Biden has ruled by executive fiat and democrat progressive elites want to win by judicial interference. Americans are tiring of intrusive big government. Democrats are overplaying their hand. The American people grow tire of wokeism, DEI, substandard education system, corrupt DOJ, open borders, high interest rates, high food prices, forced expensive green energy policy, the destruction of our military, and an intrusive bloated overspending government. Trump will win in 2024 and the democrat authoritarIan rule will give him the win.

Oddly you’re not complaining that Baron and Mellania aren’t on the ticket. Why are you OK with disenfranchising voters who would vote for them?

What's going to give Trump the win will be the terror attacks inside the US that will begin going off this summer from those illegal migrants who belong to foreign militaries and terrorist groups.

I wonder what the few thousand NYC police are going to do when a hundred thousand terrorists launch an attack in their city from within and steamroller/sack the city?

What are DC, Chicago, LA, and SF going to do when it happens there too?

What is Congress going to do when its members meet that invading army inside the halls of the Capitol? Cry for help from a disarmed and ammo-less populace?

As for the cause of the civil war; politics and power.

As for the idea that no Democrat living today is responsible for the slavery of their ancestors... If that's true, then why are the Democrats of today trying to make everyone else of today responsible for the slavery of yesterday? Why are Democrats trying to force people who were never slave owners to pay reparations to people who were never slaves if no one today is responsible?
