Variations on a theme

Silhouettes, shadows, what's the difference?
A silhouette is where the camera faces the subject with the light source behind it. The subject is there, but is darkened due to the backlighting.
A shadow requires the camera pointed in the opposite direction, and shows the absence of the light on the surroundings.
