I know we all (apart from some enlightened souls) worry way too much about ratings.

But, for another thread, I downloaded my story list to Excel this morning, so as to add the word counts.

I also calculated my weighted rating, which I haven’t looked at in a while.

[If it isn’t obvious, multiply each story rating by the vote count and add this all up, divide it by the sum of just the vote counts.]

It’s 4.43 overall, and 4.55 if I exclude my “experiment” with Harper’s Reckoning, which is a total outlier (rated 3.32 with no other story under 4).

I know it’s a meaningless stat, but kinda fun.

How about you?

Seems rather arbitrary. Favours older stories, stand-alone stories that get higher votes than series (which tend to get lower votes as you go) and favours categories with higher vote counts (LW, Incest) vs those that don't.

I do track average rating across all stories (total rating / number of stories), coz it's an easy way to see if, over time, folk enjoy them more.

It’s meant to be fun, not science, hun 😊.

Per the disagreement from yesterday, your friend must be doing a maths degree in the UK.
Lest just say she’s doing mathematics, shall we? Spending the long weekend with mostly Brits as it is.

I had never thought to do this.

The unweighted average score for all of my 58 stories is 4.53. The average is dragged down by the fact that I've published 7 750-word stories, all of which have scores well under 4.5, and two Loving Wives stories, both of which have scores under 4, because they concern wives having sex outside marriage with "insufficient negative consequences."

But if I weight them by votes, my average is 4.6. My incest and exhibitionism stories generally have decently high scores and get high view and vote counts, which offset the relatively weaker numbers of some of the other stories.

The longer I do this, the less I care about scores. I just want people to read my stories and enjoy them.

Stick to your guns. We fought and won a revolution in part to stop mad King George from foisting unnecessary letters on us. At least, that's what I recall.

100%. I care about scores for about the first 5 days following a new publication, to see how it is received. After that... I only care about comments.

And forever more the Brits will be bad guys. Let's overlook the fact that the Continental Army numbered 230k soldiers, with a further 165k state militia, vs the Brit combined troop count of 72k, 30k of which were German mercenaries. Or that the Brits were simultaneously fighting the French, Spanish and Dutch. I mean, we just wanted to be repaid for defending the colonies from the French during the French and Indian War, which lasted for nine years and left Great Britain in debt. Was that too much to ask? mutter mutter

If, by letters, you are referring to writs of assistance, then yes, your recollection is legit.

I’m sleeping with the enemy, hun. Or at least the progeny of the enemy 😊. Does that mean I get tarred and feathered? Not sure that’s my kink to be honest.
